Baldramsdorf: Culture and Mountain Landscapes

Baldramsdorf lies at the foot of Goldeck and combines impressive mountain scenery with an unusually rich cultural history. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Carinthia can choose between castle ruins, the history of crafts, church art and mountain experiences. Particularly appealing is the combination of peaceful discoveries in the valley and excursions to 2,142 m-high Goldeck.

Ortenburg and Crafts as Special Travel Experiences

Ortenburg Castle stands on a rocky promontory east of Baldramsdorf. It was completed in 1140 at an elevation of 740 m and was once the largest castle in Carinthia. Today, Ortenburg Castle Ruins offer views across the valley. This makes them an excellent place to get to know the historic side of the municipality without limiting your stay exclusively to museum visits.

The 1st Carinthian Handicrafts Museum is located in Ortenburg Castle, the “Paternschloß” in Unterhaus. It presents the history of traditional crafts and trades across around 700 m² of exhibition space, with more than 40 crafts and trades represented in over 30 workshops or departments. The workshop displays are based on historical models. Picture documents, personal accounts, photographs, diagrams, information panels and master craftsman certificates convey the character of former workplaces. For families with different interests, this visit offers many specific topics to discover together.

Churches, Works of Art and Regional History

Sacred architecture is also part of Baldramsdorf’s character. The Baldramsdorf Lenten cloth is dated 1555 and comprises 39 pictorial panels. The parish church is a representative Late Gothic church building that, according to its inscription, was artistically vaulted in 1522 by master builder Laurenz Rieder. The free-standing west tower has Late Gothic lower storeys; its upper storey and spire date from 1885. Inside, the space is defined by a two-aisled hall, a richly patterned rib vault supported by two octagonal pillars and wall pillars, as well as different vaults in the north and south choirs.

Further details can be discovered in the smaller sacred buildings: The chapel on Lampersberg has a flat ceiling with colourful stencil paintings and inscriptions from the early 16th century. The Chapel of St. Lambert on Lampersberg can be reached from Rosenheim via a forest track in about one hour on foot. In Gendorf, the subsidiary church houses a statuette of Saint Nicholas dating from the mid-15th century. The subsidiary church in Rosenheim displays depictions of the Trinity. The Lenten cloth dated 1555 and the various church interiors provide several opportunities during your holiday to take a closer look at regional art and history.

Goldeck, Educational Trail and Active Days

Goldeck reveals another side of this destination. The 2,142 m-high mountain landscape can be reached by gondola and offers opportunities for hiking in summer and skiing and snowboarding in winter. The “Talbahn Goldeck” gondola lift takes visitors directly to the reservoir in the Goldeck hiking area. The Goldeck Hut can also be reached on foot from the lower station of the Goldeck cable car in Schwaig, in the municipality of Baldramsdorf.

For a shorter activity, the 1.2-kilometre forest and bee educational trail leads from Unterhaus towards Ortenburg. Anyone looking for a more challenging mountain itinerary can take on the Goldeck 5G Challenge, a one-day hike over five peaks: Goldeck, Martennock, Staff, Eckwand and Latschur. Cycling along the Drau Cycle Path is another leisure activity associated with Baldramsdorf. Depending on the day of your holiday, you can therefore choose between culture, a short educational trail, a bike tour, a mountain railway experience and a long summit hike.

The Right Base for Planning Your Trip

When choosing your accommodation, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on. A holiday apartment in Baldramsdorf is well suited to an itinerary combining excursions to Ortenburg, the Handicrafts Museum and Goldeck. If you are primarily interested in historic interiors and regional highlights, the castle ruins, museum, Lenten cloth and churches take centre stage. For active days, Goldeck, the forest and bee educational trail, the Drau Cycle Path and the Goldeck 5G Challenge offer different options. This allows you to select the destinations according to your own interests and the programme for each day.
