Weinberg reveals itself as an idyllic woodland landscape with lush mountain meadows, scattered farmhouses and magnificent views down into and across the valley. Those who enjoy hiking will find a range of destinations: a trail up to Knoten, a cultural hike to Weinberg and a route continuing to Weinberger Alm. There are also flowering mountain meadows and reminders of the area’s former wine-growing. You can plan your vacation days around the landscapes and places you would like to discover on foot.

Mountain Meadows, Herbs and Summit Views

The ascent to Knoten passes through lush Alpine meadows and sparse woodland. The panorama then opens up, revealing numerous peaks. The combination of open meadows, scattered trees and far-reaching views shapes the character of this tour. The mountain meadows between Weinberger Alm and Oberberger Alm are also home to numerous medicinal herbs, including arnica and tormentil. Alongside the sweeping mountain vistas, the landscape therefore offers botanically interesting details.

A mountain hike leads to the larch pastures of Weinberger Alm and the flower meadows of Oberberger Alm, at the foot of the Knoten summit. Comparing these destinations reveals their different features: larch pastures at one Alpine pasture and flower meadows at the other. The name Knoten connects this landscape with the summit area; the panoramic views of numerous peaks are part of the ascent there.

Trails with Different Destinations

The hiking trail from Weinberger Alm to Knoten is called the “Franz-Striednig-Steig” and is signposted. On a route to Knoten, you reach the road leading up from Weinberger Alm and then follow the signs marked “Knoten, Franz-Striednig-Weg.” The trail and directional signs provide specific names to help you find your way when Knoten is your destination.

There are also described hikes from Dellach im Drautal to Weinberg and onwards into the mountain landscape. The cultural hike “Hochbäuerlich – hidden farming hamlets with views of the Gailtal Alps” leads from Dellach im Drautal railway station up to Weinberg in a series of switchbacks. The route “Hochtristenhaus – Just 1,000 metres of elevation gain to an idyllic high Alpine pasture” also starts at the railway station, passes through Weinberg and climbs to Weinberger Alm. One tour leads to Weinberg, while the other passes through the village on the way to the Alpine pasture—a useful distinction when choosing between these destinations.

Local History and a Community Celebration

The name Weinberg recalls the area’s former wine-growing, which was encouraged by the mild climate of the Ochsenschlucht gorge opposite. The local history is reflected in a name linked to an earlier use of the landscape. A celebration also connects Weinberg with the surrounding area: a description published in 2015 relates that the parish harvest festival of Dellach im Drautal is prepared each year by a different part of the parish. At the 2015 festival, Weinberg took part in organizing the event together with Drassnitzdorf, Schmelz and Grientschnig. This is an example of Weinberg’s participation in a shared parish festival, not of an event held exclusively for the village.
