Mallnitz: Nature Trails, Mountain History and Discoveries
Anyone looking for holiday accommodation in Mallnitz for active yet varied days away will find a place where nature trails, mountain history and engaging discoveries come together. The options range from nature trails and mountain hut destinations to traces of Roman roads, an exhibition at the BIOS National Park Centre and the Tauernbad spa. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house, it is therefore particularly interesting to consider which types of experiences you would like to shape your stay.
Nature trails with different starting points
The Seebachtal nature trail leads from the information stand at Lake Stappitz to the Schwussnerhütte hut. If you would like to explore a different route, you can plan the Rabisch Gorge circular trail. It leads from the beginning of the Dösental valley via Haus Huber to Lassach. The Häusleralm hut tour begins at the sports ground in Mallnitz and leads via the Dlaskawald forest and Lemperleboden to the Häusleralm.
Other specific destinations include the Mallnitz Tauern Roman Road and the Dösental Block Glacier Trail. The Roman road leads from the Jamnigalm car park via Wirtriegel, Laschgwald and Glitschboden to the Tauern Cross. The Dösental Block Glacier Trail leads from the Arthur von Schmid House to the Mallnitz Saddle. These different starting and finishing points help you organise your days away around the routes and themes you prefer, without having to combine all activities into a single programme.
Traces of Romans and Celts
Mallnitz also offers access to the history of Alpine routes. Under Roman rule, passable roads were built over the Korntauern and the Mallnitz Tauern; their remains can still be clearly identified in the landscape today. The historic Roman road over the Hohe Tauern to Böckstein follows ancient trade routes, passes Lake Tauern and connects natural and cultural landscapes.
One discovery makes the region's earlier history particularly tangible: the discovery of a Celtic silver coin at the Mallnitz Tauern is evidence of the presence of the Celts on Mallnitz soil. The Christ the King Church is also part of the local history. It was built in 1974/75 according to the plans of the architect DI Kurt Miessler under Pastor Jakob Santer. Mallnitz is also part of the Mountain Climbing Villages initiative and stands for sustainable Alpine tourism.
Nature knowledge, exhibitions and the Tauernbad spa
The BIOS National Park Centre Mallnitz offers interactive guided tours of the exhibition. Workshops are also held in the research workshops known as “rangerlabs”. The “univerzoom national park” exhibition presents numerous interactive stations on topics such as rockfalls, wilderness and wildlife diversity. This means that a stay can be planned not only around trails and historic landscapes, but also around knowledge of nature and engaging content. When a travel group has different interests, alternating between activity, exhibitions and relaxation can determine the choice of daily destinations.
For a more tranquil part of your stay, the Tauernbad Mallnitz should be included in your plans. Following renovations in autumn 2017, access to the Tauernbad Mallnitz and the sauna was made barrier-free and is accessible to all guests. This complements the numerous trail and cultural experiences with an opportunity to enjoy your stay in a different way.
Arriving and choosing accommodation
The Mallnitz-Obervellach ICE railway station is located directly at the entrance to Mallnitz. The hiking bus also connects the main starting points in the Seebachtal and Tauerntal valleys and the surrounding area. This information is helpful if you would like to choose a holiday apartment or holiday house according to your planned mix of travel experiences. For a trip with several generations or different interests, it may be useful to decide in advance whether nature trails, historic sites, the BIOS National Park Centre or the Tauernbad spa should be the focus.
For further regional orientation, you can also look at Winkl, Lainach and Innerfragant. This means Mallnitz remains the starting point for your search, while you can also include other places in your personal travel plans.
