Discover Eberstein: Culture, Nature and Trails

Eberstein combines striking cultural monuments with special nature experiences and a variety of trails. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a stay in Carinthia will find options here for a range of holiday experiences: historic buildings, circular trails, a natural monument, regional traditions and opportunities for hiking or mountain biking tours.

Culture between the fortified church, castle and Carinthian folk songs

One prominent building is the Hohenfeistritz parish church. The late Gothic fortified church complex, with its gate tower and wall tower, is situated at around 1,000 m on a foothill of the Saualpe. It was built as a unified structure between 1446 and 1491. This makes it one of the destinations where the historic character of the landscape can be experienced particularly vividly, without having to limit your stay to museum visits alone.

Eberstein Castle towers above Eberstein. The complex covers 6,000 m² and creates a distinct architectural accent in the townscape. The Carinthian Folk Song House offers another way to experience the region's culture: Justinus Mulle, Gerhard Glawischnig and Günther Mittergradnegger were active there. In front of the house stands the Song Fountain, where the songs of the Carinthian folk-song composers honoured there can be played at the press of a button.

Hiking trails with different themes

Several trails, each with its own character, are available for active days. The Silberschatzweg in St. Oswald is a circular trail that begins at the meeting garden of the Biolandhaus ARCHE. Along the route lies the former silver mine from the 16th century, which is preserved today as a remaining cavern measuring 3 × 2 m. The mine's historic use and its present-day form clearly belong to different periods.

The Bible Hiking Trail in Eberstein comprises 15 stations and ends at a Kneipp basin high above Eberstein. Another circular hiking trail leads from St. Oswald via the Steinmar Gnadenquelle spring to the Kneipp basin and back again. Anyone planning several days in the region can incorporate these thematically different trails separately into their daily itinerary instead of approaching every tour with the same focus.

Rock Gate, Wild Boar Trail and Landscape

The Rock Gate of Eberstein is an officially certified natural monument. The rock arch is 16 m wide and 11 m high. A signposted hiking trail leads to the Rock Gate in about 20 minutes. This makes it possible to combine a nature experience with a manageable walking distance, while other tours allow more time for exercise and observing the landscape.

The Eberstein Wild Boar Trail is designed as a circular walk. Its features include a treetop viewing platform, an observation point at a safe distance and a wild boar school. For families, this trail can therefore be an informative activity when wildlife observation and nature education are desired; the Rock Gate or one of the themed hiking trails can be combined with a different daily itinerary.

Active adventures with strong regional roots

Eberstein is the home of Carinthian Blond Cattle, an ancient breed of cattle from Carinthia. This regional speciality adds an agricultural aspect to the cultural and landscape impressions. For longer tours, the Görtschitztalweg (R7A) runs for around 64 kilometres from Klagenfurt via Eberstein to Hüttenberg. Eberstein is also considered a starting point for extensive hikes and varied mountain biking tours. At the Steinerhütte, specially converted and tested safety sleds for uphill sledding are available for hire.

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider which holiday focus is most important to you: historic buildings and regional culture, themed trails and natural monuments, or longer hiking and mountain biking days. A holiday apartment in Eberstein provides a suitable base for this, without requiring you to commit to just one way of travelling.
