Sadin: Crosses and religious remembrance
Accommodation in Sadin
The crosses in Sadin differ in their materials, design and commemorative purpose; their history also leads back to earlier burial customs and a historic route. Anyone interested in small religious monuments and local traditions of remembrance will find several specific stories here rather than a single, uniform type of cross.
Distinctive crosses
The Lauchart Taferl is located in Sadin, on the road to the vulgo Moosbauer farm. It is a larch-wood cross attached to a spruce. The figure of Christ is made from a beechwood board and painted. The combination of tree, types of wood and painted figure gives this cross its distinctive design.
The Lauchart Cross, by contrast, is a masonry wayside shrine with a steep pyramidal roof covered in wooden shingles. Inside the shrine is a life-size, wood-carved Man of Sorrows. The figure was moved there from the former Moosbauer Cross. Thus, at the Taferl, the cross on the tree and the painted figure take centre stage, while at the shrine it is the masonry structure and the Man of Sorrows.
The Holzer Cross offers another point of interest: it stands close to the house at Sadin 1 and commemorates Maria Holzer, who died in 2010. Its back panel is also notable for its specific design: it was made from around 4,500 matchsticks glued to wood. Here, the commemorative purpose and the craftsmanship are closely linked.
Former routes and customs
The former Moosbauer Cross stood at the vulgo Moosbauer farm, west of the house. It formerly served as a prayer station and resting place for the dead during funerals. In addition, a meat blessing for the surrounding residents was held there every year at Easter.
The old church and burial route from St. Andrä to Altenmarkt is also part of this local history. It used to pass through Sadin by the vulgo Moosbauer farm, the old Moosbauer Cross and the farmstead below it, known as vulgo Lippitzer or Liebitzer. The names and stops give the historic route a specific local context: it was not just a road between two places, but also passed the farms and religious landmarks along the way.
Seasonal accommodation in Sadin
The Pettacher Hut at Sadin 8 is rented out from May to October. This period is a specific point of reference for planning your trip and accommodation. If you are considering the hut, check that your preferred dates fall within the stated rental period.
Culture in the municipality of Weitensfeld im Gurktal
Other cultural and culinary topics relate specifically to the municipality of Weitensfeld im Gurktal. Parts of the historic fortifications have been preserved at Altenmarkt parish church. The Weitensfeld Kranzelreiten is held every year at Pentecost in the same municipality; since 2016, it has been recognised as an intangible UNESCO cultural heritage. If the festival is part of your travel plans, check the exact event dates in advance.
As a culinary highlight, visitors can sample air-cured Gurktaler bacon in the municipality. This brings together a range of interests: historic traces in the built environment, a recurring tradition and regional food culture. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which of these topics you would particularly like to shape your stay, while keeping the distinct location and municipality references separate.
