Discover Flattnitz: Lake, History and Mountain Trails
Flattnitz is a historic mountain pass in the Gurktal Alps, situated at an altitude of around 1,400 m, and connects Carinthia with Styria. The village can be reached via the well-developed Flattnitzer Landesstraße (L63). Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Flattnitz will find a base for a wide variety of holiday experiences: lakeside nature, historic buildings, playful water experiences, hiking and winter sports are all part of the character of this pass village.
Lake, Forest and Trails for Different Holiday Experiences
Lake Flattnitz lies amid coniferous forests and can be circumnavigated on a loop trail. A walk around the lake offers a peaceful way to take in the landscape and combine your stay with an experience in nature. Those who prefer higher elevations and longer outings will find tours and hikes in Flattnitz for beginners and advanced hikers, leading up to an altitude of 1,860 m. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a stay by the lake and more demanding excursions into the mountain landscape.
A special idea for families is the Almenwasserweg trail. The loop trail is 7.4 kilometres long and includes seven interactive stations. Children in particular can play with pumps and water pipes there. This makes the trail an exploration tour that combines exercise with hands-on discovery. If children have different interests, this experience can easily be combined with a more leisurely walk around Lake Flattnitz or a cultural excursion.
Historical Traces at the Pass
The history of Flattnitz goes back a long way. A Roman post road ran from Virunum on the Zollfeld plain through the Gurk Valley and over Flattnitz to the north. The Roman post station Tarnasici is also identified with Flattnitz. This historical significance is also reflected in St. John’s Church in Flattnitz. Built around 1330, the early Gothic rotunda has a main choir, two polygonal side apses and a fortified sacristy tower. Together with the former hospice building to the west, the church forms a picturesque group of buildings.
The village is also noteworthy from an ecclesiastical-historical perspective: in 1521, many indulgences were granted to the church in Flattnitz. The Amtshaus on Flattnitz was probably built in the 16th century and has been a listed monument since August 1966. It is one of the oldest administrative buildings in Austria and is probably the oldest Amtshaus in Carinthia. Those interested in architectural history and historical connections can thus enrich their stay with further cultural impressions.
Winter Sports and Choosing Your Accommodation
Flattnitz also offers several possibilities in winter. Winter sports enthusiasts have a total of 10 km of cross-country ski tracks in a sunny location. For alpine skiing, Adolf Isopp operates a drag lift and two pistes that are particularly suitable for children and beginners. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether the focus should be on cross-country skiing, first downhill runs, hiking or cultural discoveries. A holiday apartment or holiday house in Flattnitz is particularly worth considering if you want to shape your stay around the different facets of the pass village without committing yourself to just one type of holiday.
When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth first deciding on the rhythm you want: should the day begin at the lake, offer a shared experience on the Almenwasserweg, focus on historic buildings or take place on the cross-country ski tracks and pistes in winter? Flattnitz brings these themes together within a compact area, without every trip having to follow the same pattern.
