Holiday apartment in Vuno – Churches, Gjipe Canyon and Ionian Sea
Vuno is an old coastal village with distinctive architecture. Its townscape includes stone houses and narrow lanes, while also offering impressive views of the Ionian Sea. Among these architectural and natural features are churches, a clearly structured village centre and paths leading towards the coast.
Culture
The Church of Saint Spyridon in Vuno is a Category I cultural monument and is dated to 1778. The historic centre of Vuno is also clearly defined in its structure: it consists of two zones. Zone I encompasses the buildings on both sides of the national road, mainly in old Vuno. Zone II lies below the national road and includes the complex comprising the Church of Saint Spyridon, the school and the Church of Saint Michael.
The Church of Saint Nicholas is located in the upper part of the village of Vuno in Himarë. It was designated a Category I cultural monument in 2015. The building is constructed from stones bonded with lime mortar and has a single nave. Its architectural and artistic features include a semicircular apse and frescoes dating from 1783.
The history of Vuno is reflected in its old churches, houses with cultural monument status and local traditions. As a result, various forms of the traditional townscape coexist in the village: religious buildings, historic houses and cultural customs are all part of this context.
Nature and paths
The descent from Vuno to the sea leads to Gjipe Beach, with sand and clear water. Beyond it stretches a completely rocky coastline. The change from the sandy beach section to the rocky coastline that follows is expressly part of the described route from Vuno to the sea.
The Gjipe Canyon lies between Vuno and Ilias. It is visited by many nature lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts. Another path leads to Jal Beach: apart from a few steeper sections, it is mostly flat and reaches the paved main road to Jal Beach.
