Velipojë lies at the Buna’s estuary into the Adriatic Sea. Velipojë Beach stretches for approximately 14 kilometres and is up to 200 metres wide. On its western side, it is bordered by the Velipojë protected area. The coast, river estuary and natural areas thus shape the town’s geographical setting.

Nature between the Buna and Viluni

The Viluni Lagoon lies approximately 2 kilometres east of Velipojë Beach. It is connected to the sea by a channel approximately 500 metres long and 30 to 40 metres wide. A wetland complex forms in the lower reaches of the Buna, including the Viluni Lagoon and other interconnected wetlands.

The Buna–Velipojë protected area is an important corridor for bird migration as well as a wintering and breeding area for waterbirds. The Buna has a natural delta in which the island of Ada is located. The Viluni Lagoon has a rich and diverse wildlife, particularly a species-rich bird population.

Birdwatching and activities

A heron colony with spoonbills, ibises, herons and pygmy cormorants is located at the Buna estuary. Herons, flamingos and other migratory birds can also be observed in Velipojë. Thus, different bird species are the focus along the coast and in the wetlands, from the colony at the river estuary to the town’s migratory birds.

Paddleboarding is possible on Velipojë Beach. Cycling routes and off-road trails lead from Velipojë into the surrounding wetlands and pine forests. The Buna estuary offers opportunities for fishing. At Velipojë Beach, many local and foreign visitors use the sand for therapeutic sunbathing, as known in traditional folk medicine.

Culture and history

Conical burial mounds built from stones have been found at Malin e Luarzit. The ruins of a church are located on the banks of the Buna. Both sites complement the natural and coastal features with archaeological and historical traces.
