La Phù’s religious monument complex

La Phù brings together a closely adjoining monument complex and traditional crafts. Đình La Phù and Chùa La Phù stand directly beside one another, forming an architectural complex based on the principle “deity in front, Buddha behind.” By Decision No. 191-VH/QĐ of 22 March 1988, the Đình, chùa La Phù complex was classified as a national architectural and artistic monument. For a trip focused on cultural history, this juxtaposition offers a concrete starting point: architectural form, religious significance, and preserved objects are all part of a connected story here.

Đình La Phù was built in the chữ-Tam style and comprises Tam quan, Đại đình, and Hậu cung. These three named elements make the site understandable as an architecturally structured whole; the Chùa complements it as an immediately adjoining part of the complex. Tĩnh Quốc đại vương, the guardian deity of La Phù village, is worshipped at the Đình. The combination of a clear architectural form and worship of the guardian deity also anchors the site in the village’s religious tradition.

Steles, bells, and sculptures

Chùa La Phù preserves two square steles erected in 1677, as well as the stele Thiên Hưng tự hậu phật bia ký from the Lê-Trung-Hưng period. Two bells provide specific dates: Thiên Hưng cổ tích was cast in 1794, and Thiên Hưng tự chung in 1849. The steles and bells can therefore be placed in different time frames: for the steles, the focus is on 1677 or a historical period, while for the bells it is on the year each was cast.

The collection also includes three naturalistically designed stone statues in the folk art style of the 17th to 18th centuries and three bronze statues cast in the 19th century. The bronze statues depict Từ Đạo Hạnh, Không Lộ, and Giác Hải. Different materials and periods thus come together in the collection: for the stone figures, design and period are the focus, while the bronzes also add the figures depicted. Visitors particularly interested in architecture can take the chữ-Tam style as a starting point; the objects offer other points of comparison, including date, material, and figures.

Crafts and local food traditions

A 2025 government account describes La Phù as a craft village for bánh kẹo (confectionery) and knitwear. Traditional production sectors include food processing and the making of cakes and sweets, particularly traditional-style bánh nướng and bánh dẻo. Textile work and food crafts thus represent two distinct areas of production; the named types of cakes give the sweet side a specific profile.

When choosing a holiday rental in La Phù, you can first consider which focus you want your stay to have: the complex’s architecture and historic objects, or its crafts and food traditions.
