Tt. Đông Anh: Cổ Loa, Moats and Culture
Accommodation in Tt. Đông Anh
Tt. Đông Anh can be explored through two distinct focal points: Thị trấn Đông Anh is home to Chợ Trung tâm Đông Anh and Chợ Ga Đông Anh markets, while the specially protected national monument of Cổ Loa lies nearby. There, moats, ramparts and an exhibition house with archaeological finds shape the impression of the monument area. This distinction is useful when looking for a holiday apartment: you can plan your stay around the town itself or focus on cultural topics related to Cổ Loa.
The Water Landscape and Ramparts of Cổ Loa
Cổ Loa is surrounded by a dense network of waterways. Outside each rampart ring is a moat with an average width of 10 to 30 metres. The moats are connected to one another and to the Hoàng River. Together, the water and the structures form part of the character of the nearby monument area. If you are interested in the layout of historic places, you will find a tangible connection here between rampart rings, moats and the river. The way the moats connect to one another makes the water network easy to appreciate, as does their position outside the rampart rings.
A statement from December 2024 describes measures for managing, protecting, preserving and presenting the values of the national monument. It identifies the goal of developing the heritage into a significant and attractive travel destination in Vietnam, as well as part of a tourist route in Hanoi. On 22 February 2026, the Cổ Loa Spring Festival 2026 opened at the monument. This date places this particular festival edition in time.
The Exhibition House and Its Themes
The exhibition house for documents and archaeological finds from the Cổ Loa monument area is associated with the above-ground ensemble of architectural monuments. The first floor features a scale model, a plan and a screening room with documentaries and images about the monument area. The second floor displays 300 selected archaeological finds. They span the Phùng Nguyên period to the present day and are connected with the history of Cổ Loa–Đông Anh in Hanoi.
The floors therefore offer different ways into the subject: the model, plan and visual materials relate to the monument area as a whole, while the artefacts cover a period from early history to the present. When it opened, the exhibition house offered visitors the opportunity to see, explore and study this significant national monument area. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether visits are possible.
Crafts and Food on a Tour
Launched in 2023, the tour “Tìm về kinh đô người Việt cổ” brought together two hands-on experiences. Visitors could make clay arrowheads, inspired by a replica of an arrowhead mould that scientists found in Cổ Loa. They could also watch bún xào cần Mạch Tràng being prepared and try the dish. Craftwork and food were both part of the programme, but offered different experiences: one drew on an archaeological find, while the other centred on a dish. If this type of tour suits your travel plans, check in advance whether it is offered on your chosen date.
Getting Your Bearings: Markets and Transport
Chợ Trung tâm Đông Anh and Chợ Ga Đông Anh are both in Thị trấn Đông Anh, huyện Đông Anh, Hanoi. A dated directory of essential-goods providers lists opening hours of 6:00 to 22:00 for both markets. Check these hours before visiting. For transport, a dated timetable lists Transerco bus route 53A as a connection between Hoàng Quốc Việt and Thị trấn Đông Anh. Check the current timetable before making firm plans to use the route.
Choosing a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Travel Focus
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh the two locations against each other: the markets are in the town, while the Cổ Loa monument area and exhibition house are nearby. If you want your stay to centre on the town, keep Thị trấn Đông Anh in mind; if exhibitions and monuments are your priority, include Cổ Loa in your plans.
