In Hanoi, the history of learning and rule meets vibrant urban experiences: the Văn Miếu–Quốc Tử Giám Temple of Literature and education district tells the story of scholars in monarchical Vietnam, while the imperial Citadel of Thăng Long bears witness to the city’s political history. At Hoàn Kiếm Lake, outdoor exercise and a water puppet theatre offer quite different experiences. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether cultural history, urban life or both should shape your stay.

Temple District and the History of Education

Văn Miếu–Quốc Tử Giám lies south of the imperial Citadel of Thăng Long. The complex includes Hồ Văn, the Giám Garden and the inner temple area. Văn Miếu was founded in 1070 under King Lý Thánh Tông. It was used to honour Confucius, as well as earlier sages and scholars. Quốc Tử Giám was established in 1076 under King Lý Nhân Tông and was the highest educational centre in monarchical Vietnam.

A special historical record is preserved in the Garden of Doctoral Steles: 82 steles bear the names and hometowns of 1,304 doctoral graduates. They passed 82 examinations between 1442 and 1779. These figures make clear that this is not the story of a single examination, but a remembrance of education and academic achievement maintained over centuries. Anyone interested in Vietnam’s cultural history will find a tangible connection here to the people associated with the educational centre.

The heritage education programmes also build on this site. They are aimed at pupils from preschool through upper secondary school and combine visits and observation with discussions, group activities, discovery games and puzzles. Calligraphy exercises, role-play and creative work are also among the activities.

The complex also contains the square Thiên Quang Well. It measures 30 by 30 metres; its water remains full, clear and still throughout the year. This offers a quieter note within the temple area than the steles and educational programmes.

Traces of the Imperial Citadel

The central sector of the imperial Citadel of Thăng Long–Hanoi lies in the heart of the city. It was built in the 11th century under Vietnam’s Lý dynasty on the remains of a Chinese fortress dating from the 7th century, and marked the independence of Đại Việt. For nearly thirteen centuries, the citadel was a centre of regional political power. Archaeological layers and architectural monuments illustrate its long-standing presence and continuous role as a seat of power.

Water Puppetry, the Lake and the Old Quarter

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is located on Đinh Tiên Hoàng Street beside Hoàn Kiếm Lake in central Hanoi. It has a modern, purpose-built hall for water puppetry with just under 300 seats, designed to meet the needs of all audience groups. The theatre offers a cultural contrast to the historic sites and adds a distinctive form of performance to your trip.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake also shows the city as a place for outdoor exercise. Before sunrise, joggers and people practising Tai Chi gather along its shores. At weekends, the lake is closed to vehicles and becomes a place for entertainment and outdoor activities. If you prefer quieter early-morning experiences or a livelier weekend during your stay, these are different facets of city life to consider when planning.

The Old Quarter is easy to explore on foot. Its food is also part of the experience: cooks serve steaming bowls of Phở and Bún chả there. Walks and local dishes give your stay a different focus from the history of scholars or the citadel.
