Kirazli combines an elevated setting at the foot of Çam Dağı with a deeply cut river valley and many traces of its history. Those interested in forest landscapes, water and cultural history will discover different sides of the area: the Maden Deresi, evidence of earlier times and an unusual cherry dish. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay most.

Forests and Water at the Maden Deresi

Kirazli lies at an elevated location at the foot of Çam Dağı and among the peaks of hills that run parallel to the coast. Lush forests, numerous springs and fertile soil shape the surrounding area. The Maden Deresi flows through a deep valley with steep slopes. Pines, oaks, hornbeams, beeches and yews grow there—a diverse mix that gives the valley its distinctively wooded character. The river is fed by spring water from Çam Dağı and flows into the Black Sea. Fish species such as carp and rudd occur naturally in the Maden Deresi.

Caves and tunnels are also among the sights along the Maden Deresi. Some cave entrances along the paths are open, while others have been closed because of the risk of collapse or getting lost. On tourist excursions to the Maden Deresi, visitors walk through tunnels to a waterfall. The distinction between open and closed entrances is part of finding your way around during a visit.

Traces from Different Eras

Kirazli has tumulus burial mounds, or earthen mounds made of piled-up earth and stones, especially in its hazelnut orchards. They point to settlement dating back to antiquity. Another historical trace is the trade route that, since Roman times, ran from Hendek via Çam Dağı and Kirazli onwards to Kocaali İskelesi, contributing to the region’s development. The local history thus links early signs of settlement with a route that was important for trade over a long period.

Two-storey timber-framed houses known as konaks were also part of the historic settlement. In the early 20th century, the Orthodox Church of the Assumption of Mary was also part of Kirazli’s cultural heritage. These landmarks represent different facets of local history and can be considered alongside the history of the trade route and evidence of earlier settlement. Copper, lead and zinc ore mining began in the Kirazli area in 1888—another aspect of the area’s economic history.

A Distinctive Cherry Cuisine

Kirazli’s local food culture offers a surprising combination: dark red cherries were made into cherry pickles and eaten fried in butter in winter. The fruit was therefore not only used in sweet dishes, but first pickled and later cooked warm. For travelers interested in regional traditions as well as scenery and history, this dish is a memorable part of local history. It adds a distinctive culinary note to the area’s natural and cultural themes.
