Mukdahan
Accommodation in Mukdahan
Mukdahan reveals many sides: Ho Kaeo Mukdahan offers views over the city and the Mekong, while Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park brings nature and history together with rock pools, lotus species and prehistoric paintings. Exhibitions in the city offer insights into the ways of life in the region. Which of these experiences appeals to you most may also shape your search for a holiday rental for your stay.
Views and cultural insights
Ho Kaeo Mukdahan is a 65.50-metre-high concrete tower. From there, you can enjoy views over the city of Mukdahan, the Mekong and Savannakhet on the Laotian side of the river. This brings together views of the city, the great river and the opposite bank—a striking introduction if you would first like to get to know Mukdahan through its geographical setting.
At the base of the tower, exhibitions showcase the ways of life of Mukdahan’s eight ethnic groups, life on both banks of the Mekong and the history of the city. Mukdahan is home to eight different ethnic minorities. The exhibitions therefore offer a distinct focus alongside the views, turning attention to the people and history that are part of the place’s character.
Rocky landscapes in Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park
Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park is a natural attraction in Pa Rai, Don Tan, Mukdahan. On the summit of Phu Sa Dok Bua are eleven rock pools. They are about 2 to 3 metres wide, hold water all year round and are covered with small lotus species. The combination of rock, water and plants makes these pools a distinctive natural feature of the park.
The landscape also tells a long human story: Phu Pha Taem in the national park is a cliff face bearing handprints and prehistoric rock paintings. The park is also home to the approximately 500-metre-long Phu Pha Taem Nature Trail. Those interested in nature will find both distinctive landscape features and traces of earlier human activity here. The trail and the cliff face are different aspects of a visit to the park; the trail’s length is a useful detail when planning your day.
Relaxation by the Mekong and a cross-border connection
Kaeng Kabao is located in Ban Na Kae Noi, Pong Kham, Wan Yai, Mukdahan, opposite Kaeng Kabao village in Laos. The Mekong forms the border between the two sides. The area is used for relaxation, family activities and swimming; visitors who go into the water can borrow inflatable rings. This focus is quite different from the views from the tower and the nature and history of the national park.
The Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge is also part of the region’s border geography: it is the border crossing between Mukdahan and Savannakhet. Together with the view from Ho Kaeo Mukdahan towards the Laotian riverbank, it makes the connection across the Mekong visible in different ways. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would most like to experience the city’s history, rocky landscapes or relaxation by the river.
Regional cuisine and further orientation
Khao Piak, Vietnamese Kuai Chap, rice porridge and blood curry are recommended at the five-way intersection of Mukdahan’s Vietnamese community. This selection complements the cultural insights with a culinary focus. When looking for a holiday rental in Mukdahan, you can use your travel interests as a starting point: views and city history, natural features and rock formations, or activities and relaxation along the Mekong offer different reasons to explore the region.
