In Uttaradit, impressive natural attractions meet regional crafts and distinctive culinary traditions. Phu Soi Dao National Park extends across Nam Pat District in Uttaradit Province and Chat Trakan District in Phitsanulok Province. Hiking enthusiasts can climb to Lan Son, which stands 1,633 metres above sea level. This gives the trip a clear focus on nature and hiking, while other destinations in the province appeal to quite different interests.

Mountain Landscapes, Forests and an Ancient Teak Tree

Phu Soi Dao also has a five-tier waterfall near the national park headquarters. Rugged mountain ranges and well-preserved, lush forests define the landscape of Lam Nam Nan National Park. These natural attractions offer different experiences: at Phu Soi Dao, the hike to Lan Son is a specific draw; Lam Nam Nan is characterised by its forested mountain ranges.

Another remarkable tree stands in Ton Sak Yai National Park in Nam Pat District: it is home to the largest living teak tree discovered to date. Its age is estimated at around 1,500 years. It is up to 47 metres tall, and its trunk has a circumference of 10.22 metres at chest height. Part of its crown has broken off naturally. Its size and long history make the tree a natural monument with a character all its own—a different way to experience Uttaradit's landscape than hiking in the mountains.

Sirikit Reservoir: Water and Wide-Open Views

Sirikit Dam, Thailand's largest earth-fill dam, is located in Tha Pla District. The associated Sirikit Reservoir has numerous islands and is suitable for rafting and scenic boat trips. Activities on the reservoir also include boat trips for observing nature, kayaking and fishing. Alongside hiking, this offers a different focus for a trip: experiencing the water and landscape from a boat.

At Sirikit Dam, the Chaloem Phrakiat Bridge spans the Nan River as a suspension bridge. It adds a striking structure to the sights around the reservoir. Travellers primarily seeking nature and outdoor activities can consider the attractions at Phu Soi Dao and the water activities at Sirikit Reservoir as different options.

Crafts, History and Local Specialties

Uttaradit also offers insights into traditional skills. The Nam Phi Iron Well Museum showcases traditional iron smelting and sword-forging techniques. The Nam Phi iron wells consist of two clearly visible wells, Phra Saeng and Phra Khan. Historically, they are associated with iron used for royal swords. Together, the museum and the wells shed light on different aspects of the same craft tradition: working iron and the special significance of the material.

In Lap Lae, traditional Tin-Jok weaving has been passed down for many generations. Local cuisine also has its own specialty: Long Lap Lae is a durian variety from Lap Lae District. A monument there commemorates the virtues of the widows of Lap Lae, as told in legend, and is one of the district's important sights. These cultural and culinary themes contrast with the natural experiences and offer further possible focuses for a trip.

Among the historic buildings is Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang in Ban Thung Yang, in Thung Yang Subdistrict of Lap Lae District. The temple has a traditional Lanna vihara with a three-tiered roof and old murals depicting the story of Phra Sang Thong. The monument to Phraya Phichai Dab Hak also stands in front of the Uttaradit Provincial Hall.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday rental in Uttaradit, it helps to start with the experiences you want to shape your trip: hiking and mountain scenery, water activities at Sirikit Reservoir, or culture, history and regional specialties. You can then choose the places you would like to look into more closely according to your preferred travel theme. Those planning around a range of interests will find different options among the nature, water and cultural experiences, rather than having to reduce the province to a single holiday focus.
