Ubon Ratchathani offers different perspectives on nature and culture: the Mun River flows through the middle of the province, while plateaus and mountain ranges shape its landscape. There are also rock formations, historical sites, silk weaving and an elaborate Candle Festival. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider which of these aspects you’d like to shape your stay.

River Landscapes and Distinctive Rock Formations

Don Tana is an island lying across the Mun River, dividing it into two branches. At Kaeng Tana, Thailand’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge connects the park office with Don Tana. The island, river branches and bridge form a distinctive combination that also makes Ubon Ratchathani appealing to travellers who like to pair landscapes with a striking structure.

Sam Phan Bok offers a different kind of rocky landscape: water erosion has carved more than 3,000 small and large pools into the rock. Huai Luang Waterfall in Phu Chong-Nayoi National Park plunges about 45 metres over a cliff. The two features represent different forms of nature: sculpted pools on the one hand and a tall waterfall on the other. Pha Chanadai in Pha Taem National Park is a viewpoint where you can watch the sunrise.

Nature Experiences with Specific Route Conditions

At Kaeng Tana, there is a pool below Tad Ton Waterfall where visitors can swim. To access the route at Phu Hin Dang, you must contact park staff so they can arrange a guide. The nature trail at Sao Chaliang should only be used with a staff member accompanying you. These different conditions are useful to know when comparing nature experiences and planning your excursions accordingly.

Ubon Zoo follows the “jungle park” model, combining animal enclosures with the existing forest within the grounds. Its three nature trails are 318 metres, 740 metres and 1,464 metres long. You can use the distances as a guide if you prefer a particular route length; the shortest trail is 318 metres. For school groups, the zoo offers one-day educational visits and two-day overnight camps with one night’s stay.

Rock Paintings, Silk and the Candle Festival

The archaeological site of the prehistoric rock paintings at Pha Taem is registered as an ancient monument. In Phra Cave at Kaeng Tana, there is an inscription and the base of a Shiva lingam. Both are dated to approximately the 12th to 13th Buddhist centuries. These remains give the region a historical dimension that differs from its landscape attractions.

Ban Kham Pun is known for its mixed Mat Mi silk. It is embroidered with coloured silk as well as silver and gold threads; visitors can also watch the elaborate weaving process there. The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, held on Khao Phansa Day, offers a very different cultural highlight: a parade carries large, intricately carved candles through the city.

The local cuisine also offers something to discover: white pork sausage is one of the dishes recommended for food lovers to try in Ubon Ratchathani. The range of experiences therefore extends from nature watching and river landscapes to crafts, history and local specialities.
