Nakhon Ratchasima combines nature experiences with insights into the history and culture of Thailand’s lower northeast. Khao Yai National Park, farm visits, wildlife experiences and historic Phimai each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you would rather explore trails and watch wildlife, experience regional culture, or do both.

Nature and Wildlife in Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai National Park is a World Heritage Site and an ASEAN Heritage Park. It is located in the provinces of Saraburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok. Its importance to nature lovers is also reflected in the habitats it protects: visitors can often spot wild elephants, gaurs, gibbons, hornbills and macaques there. These animals give an impression of the diversity of the wildlife; spotting any particular species remains an experience in nature rather than a guaranteed stop on a visit.

There are seven short nature trails for walks and hikes. They range from 1.2 to 8 kilometres in length, and the stated walking times range from 45 minutes to 6 hours. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in how much time you should set aside for an outing. Overnight stays on the trails are not provided for. If you want to focus on several trails or wildlife watching, you should take these details into account when planning your day.

Farm Life, Weaving and Wildlife Experiences

At Chokchai Farm, visitors can drive their own vehicle around the farm and explore the grounds, flower fields and seasonal activities. The farm is open daily. The experience combines a drive around the grounds with insights into agricultural operations, making it different from a visit focused mainly on nature trails or cultural sites.

Jim Thompson Farm offers two further perspectives: its weaving village is an active production site where visitors can see looms and the processes involved in silk weaving. The Isan village currently comprises 40 houses featuring examples of regional Isan architecture and covers almost all building types. Craft production and the region’s architecture can thus be seen side by side. At Korat Zoo, tiger feeding is offered as an activity and enrichment programme for the predators. The animal show includes, among others, South African fur seals, otters, monkeys and birds. These offerings have a different focus from a day in the national park or a visit to historic sites.

Phimai: History and Museum

The Phimai Historical Park was the site of the city of Phimai. King Suryavarman I had a Khmer-style sanctuary built there in the 16th Buddhist century, or about 1,000 years ago, surrounded by walls and moats. This approximate historical dating refers to the sanctuary and should not be understood as an exact calendar year. In addition, Phimai National Museum houses archaeological and art-historical objects. It presents the foundations and development of the culture of Thailand’s lower northeast. Those particularly interested in Khmer history and regional culture will find a different thematic focus here than at the nature and farm attractions.

Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Rental

Khorat, also called Nakhon Ratchasima, is the main transport hub in northeastern Thailand. The train journey to Khorat also offers scenic views: along the way, you can enjoy views of, among other things, the large white Buddha figure at Wat Theppitak, which stands on a densely forested slope. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: nature trails and wildlife watching, farm and weaving experiences, or Phimai with its history and museum. Khorat’s role as a transport hub is another factor to consider when choosing a base.
