Wanli District brings together a wide range of travel interests: a sculpted coastal landscape, stories from a fishing village, seasonal crab culture and routes for outdoor activities. A particularly striking feature is the cape at 野柳地質公園. A guided tour, an annual ritual and viewpoints offer further reasons to explore the area. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether rock formations, fishing history, local traditions or walks should shape your stay.

Sandstone and the Shapes of Marine Erosion

野柳地質公園 is located on a cape that extends out into the sea and consists predominantly of sandstone. Prolonged marine erosion has shaped the coastal landscape. From the entrance to the tip, the cape stretches for about 1.7 kilometres; at its widest point, it is less than 300 metres across. The cape is elongated.

Distinctive rock and coastal formations include 女王頭, 仙女鞋, 蕈狀石, 蜂窩岩, 豆腐石, 燭台石, 薑石, 海蝕溝 and 海蝕壺穴. Their names represent a diverse range of rock formations and traces of erosion. Anyone interested in geology will find not just one striking feature here, but can observe the effects of erosion in a variety of forms. Together with the sandstone and the cape’s location, these formations explain the distinctive character of this stretch of landscape.

Fishing Village Stories and the Autumn Market

A 90-minute guided tour at 野柳瑪鋉居 explores the stories of the fishing village through several specific points of interest: historic residential architecture, traditional fishing gear and art made from marine waste. The tour also visits 野柳漁港. Its set duration makes it easy to fit into your day’s plans; in terms of content, it combines everyday history, fishing and art rather than focusing on a single attraction.

Another side of local fishing culture comes to the fore in autumn. The fishermen’s market near 龜吼漁港 draws people from September to November who want to buy 萬里蟹. This season is therefore another factor to consider when choosing when to travel. The market and the guided tour cater to different interests: one is about the seasonal desire to buy local crabs, the other about homes, equipment and the village’s stories.

Ritual, Activity and Views

The 野柳神明淨港文化祭 takes place every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month and has a history spanning more than a century. Its four main rituals are the procession to purify the sea, the full-catch ritual, the deities’ purification of the harbour and the deities’ walk over fire. Unlike the guided tour, which lasts 90 minutes, this festival is tied to a recurring date in the lunar calendar. Check the relevant date for the year of your trip when planning.

For outdoor activity, 瑪鋉運動公園 has fitness equipment, including waist twisters, pull-up bars, a walking trainer, a rowing machine and a double-wheel exerciser. A gently rising, easy-to-walk waterfront path connects the park on foot to 萬里觀光公園. Separate from this is a roughly one-kilometre path with two viewpoints overlooking 野柳漁港 and 野柳地質公園. The viewpoints give this path a different focus from the route connecting the two parks.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Holiday Rental

When looking for a holiday rental in Wanli District, it helps to decide in advance what matters most for your trip: are the rock formations the main attraction, are you especially interested in the fishing village stories, or would you like to plan around the autumn market or the paths and viewpoints? This can also help you discuss what is most important to everyone on a shared trip, without turning it into a fixed itinerary for every place.
