Sanzhi District: Cherry Blossoms, Harvest and Culture
Accommodation in Sanzhi District
Cherry blossom roads, Jiaobai cultivation and cultural attractions in the wider area give you different options to consider when planning a trip to Sanzhi District. There is also the Sansheng Trail, which runs along the river and is paved with andesite. These themes appeal to different interests and fall in different seasons. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether blossoms, harvest, cultural history or a trail with a clearly stated length should shape your stay.
Cherry blossoms: several roads, staggered blooming
Around the spring equinox, more than 20,000 Taiwan cherry trees (緋寒櫻) can be seen in Sanzhi District. Places to see the blossoms include Beiqi, Qingshan, 101, Yangguang and Beijiu roads, the Fuhai Path, and the area around the Sanzhi Celebrity Cultural Relics Museum. These Taiwan cherry trees bloom from late January to March, although the actual timing varies. This window is more useful for planning than a single fixed date.
A total of 16,000 cherry trees have been planted along Qingshan and Dahu roads in Sanzhi. Various varieties, including Taiwan cherries, Yaezakura and Yoshino cherries, bloom in succession from late January to early April. This tree-lined stretch is called “櫻木花道” and is a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms in Sanzhi District. The staggered blooming of these varieties extends into a later part of spring.
Jiaobai through the year
Jiaobai cultivation also provides a seasonal reference point. In Sanzhi District, Jiaobai shoots are planted from the middle of the fourth to the beginning of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The main harvest is around October and November, near the Double Ninth Festival.
The variety grown is red-shelled Jiaobai, which is harvested only once a year. Compared with cherry blossom season, which falls at the start of the year, the Jiaobai harvest is an autumn travel highlight. This gives you two seasonal themes to choose from, each with a distinctly different time frame.
Cultural history in the wider area
In the wider region, Yuanxingju is a historical and cultural attraction: the house is the former residence of Lee Teng-hui and a traditional Minnan courtyard house with black roof tiles and brick walls.
The 名人文物館 presents the life stories and contributions of four figures associated with Sanzhi: Du Congming, Jiang Wenye, Lee Teng-hui and Lu Hsiu-yi. Together, these offer two distinct cultural perspectives: Yuanxingju focuses on a particular house and its past connection to Lee Teng-hui, while the museum covers the lives and contributions of four people.
A riverside trail
The Sansheng Trail in Sanzhi District is about two kilometres long, runs alongside the river and is paved with andesite. Its approximate length, riverside route and surface are its defining features. This sets it apart from the cherry blossom roads: the trail is defined by its route and surface, while the cherry trees are known for their seasonal, staggered blooms.
