Lanes, shopping and local food
Jiufen Old Street is Jioufen’s main shopping district and runs through a large part of the town. Its size makes it a defining landmark for a stroll. You can also explore the winding lanes and see the town from different perspectives. These offer two distinct focuses: visiting the main shopping district and wandering around Jioufen. When planning your trip, consider which of these experiences appeals to you most to shape your stay more specifically.
Shops along Jiufen Old Street sell dishes made with yam and other local food. This adds a culinary dimension to a shopping stroll. In Jioufen’s tea houses, visitors can learn about tea culture and tea utensils, and enjoy tea with pastries. The tea houses include Jiufen Tea House, A-Mei Tea House, Haiyue Lou and Shancheng Creative Workshop. Tea and pastries offer a different focus from the food along the street: here, tea culture and utensils are also part of the experience. If you plan to visit one of the tea houses mentioned, check in advance whether a visit is possible, as the status of individual businesses may change.
Cinema history and distinctive details
Shengping Theater is at the intersection of Shuqi Road and Qingbian Road. Built in the 1930s, it was one of Taiwan’s largest cinemas during Japanese rule. Its architecture is also memorable: the ground floor is made of stone, while the upper floor is made of wood. This change in materials highlights a specific architectural detail of the theater and adds to its history as a cinema. Inside Shengping Theater, you can see a replica of an old ticket booth and vintage film posters. This brings together the building’s history and memories of going to the cinema in one place.
On the square in front of the theater, at the intersection with Shuqi Road, a striking cluster of red lanterns catches the eye. The cluster may be connected with an event.
Jioufen’s gold-mining history can also be explored further: Jiufen Gold Mine Museum was founded by a former miner and focuses on the history and process of gold mining. Together with Shengping Theater, it offers another historical focus. The subjects are distinct: the museum turns the spotlight on mining, while the theater focuses on cinema history and architecture.
