Discover Lundu: Regatta, Processions and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Lundu
The regatta on the Batang Kayan River, Chinese New Year processions and hiking trails in nearby Gunung Gading National Park give Lundu a varied character. In town, festivals and religious rituals take centre stage, while the nearby park offers hikes to Mount Gading. This creates a clear contrast to consider when planning your trip: would you rather focus your stay on Lundu’s festivals or make nature trails the priority? This choice may also influence your search for a holiday rental.
The Regatta: the highlight of Pesta Lundu
The regatta on the Batang Kayan River is the highlight of the annual Pesta Lundu. This gives the festival a clear connection to the river and makes it a notable occasion to experience Lundu. If you want to attend this particular event, check the dates for your travel year before planning your stay.
Hiking trails in nearby Gunung Gading National Park
Located near Lundu, Gunung Gading National Park was established in 1983 specifically to protect the Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world. In addition to this special conservation purpose, the park offers various hiking trails. These include a challenging hike to the summit of Mount Gading, at 965 metres. The Waterfall Trail leads to waterfalls 1, 3 and 7. The two destinations offer different experiences: the summit hike focuses on the ascent to Mount Gading, while the Waterfall Trail takes you to the waterfalls listed above. This lets you choose between a challenging summit trek and a route to several waterfalls for your hiking day.
Processions and culture in Lundu
Artists from the Malay, Chinese, Bidayuh, Salako and Iban communities performed at the Lundu Heritage Square Fest 2026 in Townsquare Lundu. Another striking cultural detail is the Chap Goh Mei procession, in which temple representatives sit on chairs resting on swords. The ritual is called “perarakan terapung”, meaning “floating procession”.
The Chinese New Year processions also follow a set calendar rhythm. In the usual schedule, on the 14th day, members of lion dance associations parade through Lundu in a ritual procession from 3 pm, accompanied by Chinese drumming. On the 15th day, the larger Chap Goh Mei procession begins at 10 am, with additional temples from the surrounding area taking part. The procession takes place twice that day, with the second part beginning at 6 pm. If you want to plan your visit around one of these processions, check the dates for your travel year.
Choose a holiday rental to suit your travel priorities
When looking for a holiday rental in Lundu, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Festival culture and processions point to events in town; if hiking is your main interest, you can include nearby Gunung Gading National Park and its different trails in your plans. If both matter to your trip, compare the planned festival dates with the time you set aside for the hiking trails. This way, you can choose a location that fits your itinerary rather than relying solely on a general impression of the region.
