Discover Limbang: River, Bukit Mas and Cultural History
Accommodation in Limbang
Riverside Setting and Mountain Slopes
Limbang lies between the Limbang River and the slopes of the Bukit Peninjau range. The river and mountain slopes give the town two distinct landscape features. If you choose Limbang as a travel destination, you can consider which themes you want to shape your stay: the town’s history, Bukit Mas or excursions to the surrounding area. This mix is a useful starting point when searching for a holiday rental in Limbang. When checking a specific option, you can compare its location with the experiences that matter to you.
Bukit Mas: Road, Stairway and Shrine
The summit of Bukit Mas can be reached by a steep road from Jln Pandaruan or on foot via a long stairway from Lake Garden at the eastern end of Limbang. This gives you two different routes to choose from when planning your visit: the road and the stairway. A small Buddhist shrine is located halfway up the summit road. Its location makes it a specific landmark along the road ascent, while the stairway from Lake Garden offers another way to reach the summit. Check the current conditions of the routes before setting out.
Local History and Culture
The slopes beside Limbang were named Bukit Mas after ancient gold objects were found there in 1899. The place’s name is therefore linked to a specific historical event. Kubu Fort is now the Limbang Regional Museum and is another point of reference for the town’s cultural history.
Hari Bukit Mas is held in Limbang every year. The 15th edition, in 2025, had the theme “Heritage, Community and Nature”. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition. A distinct historical event was documented at Pesta Hari Bukit Mas 2023: a cultural night was held on a Saturday at the Tebingan Sungai Limbang Amphitheatre. The three words in the theme can be connected to Limbang: “heritage” relates to the history of the name Bukit Mas following the 1899 gold discovery, and “nature” to its setting between the river and mountain slopes. “Community” adds the social aspect of the festival theme to these two perspectives.
Meritam in the Surrounding Area
About 35 km from Limbang, volcanic mud pools lie on a four-hectare site near Meritam. Visitors can bathe in the warm, bubbling mud pools. The Meritam Mudpot Festival is held every year around November. If you are planning a trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition. For a visit to bathe, it is also advisable to check the current access and visitor conditions.
