Garut offers a wide variety of discoveries: Kampung Dukuh is centred on a traditional spatial layout, while rivers, lakes, waterfalls and Santolo Beach offer further nature experiences. There are also village-based educational activities and cultural events. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering whether you are mainly interested in culture, water or landscapes.

Traditions and Culture in Garut

The traditional spatial layout of Kampung Dukuh was recognised as intangible cultural heritage of the province of Jawa Barat in 2024. Kampung Dukuh Dalam includes traditional buildings and places with different functions: a mosque, an adat hall, a madrasah, a Bumi Alit and the Cebor Opat Puluh bathing place. Those interested in local architecture and ways of life will find several specific aspects here, each distinct from the others.

The cultural events also each have their own focus. The annual Gebyar Pesona Budaya Garut is organised by the Garut Regency government and features traditional and modern artistic performances. The annual Gelar Budaya Situ Bagendit, meanwhile, takes place in the Situ Bagendit area; its programme includes local art, traditional ceremonies and a handicraft bazaar. Both events bring together culture, but differ in their respective offerings.

For the Selaawi area, the tourism development plan identifies birdcage handicrafts and bamboo-based creative businesses as the primary tourist attractions for handicraft tourism. These themes may be particularly interesting if you would like to include craft traditions in your trip alongside nature experiences.

Rivers, Lakes and Waterfalls

Sungai Ciharus is a visitor destination featuring a clear river, a swimming pool, a waterfall and a campsite. It brings together several water and nature features in one place. To reach Curug Ciharus, travel from Kota Garut via Pasar Leles market and the Leles intersection, also known as the Alun-alun; then follow the signs to the waterfall. Near the visitor area, there are warungs, a mushola and toilets.

Other waterfalls differ in their location and form: Curug Sanghyang Taraje is 82 metres high and lies in a valley near Desa Pakenjeng, Kecamatan Pamulihan. Kawah Darajat is a natural attraction in Garut Regency, known for its hot springs. If you are choosing outings around water landscapes, these places offer different experiences—from waterfalls to springs.

Situ Bagendit is a natural lake in Desa Sukamukti, Kecamatan Banyuresmi, Garut Regency. At Situ Cangkuang, visitors can ride on a large bamboo raft. At Santolo Beach in Desa Pameungpuek, Kecamatan Cikelet, white sandy beaches and blue waters shape the landscape; boat trips and fishing are available at designated spots. The lake, raft ride and coast therefore offer clearly distinct experiences.

Village Experiences and Special Discoveries

Desa Wisata Saung Ciburial is an educational and ecotourism destination based on local wisdom and hands-on learning about the village’s potential. Specific activities include Ngagogo, in which visitors catch fish in a pond with their bare hands. Educational activities also focus on the characteristics and care of the iconic Domba Garut sheep. As a local speciality, Saung Ciburial offers Teh Kewer, also known as Teh Karuhun, a traditional drink made from the seeds of the kewer fruit.

Agrowisata Desa Cipancar offers another way to explore nature and agriculture. The site is located at Tanah Carik Bojong Gowong in Desa Cipancar and covers an area of 1 ha. Mount Papandayan is located in Desa Sirnajaya, Kecamatan Cisurupan, Garut Regency; the road infrastructure leading there is considered adequate for visitors. These destinations appeal to different interests and can help guide your choice of outings.

When choosing a holiday rental in Garut, you can consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: traditional culture, village-based learning, waterscapes or the beach. The places mentioned offer different themes, without constituting a single shared route. You can also visit the location page for Garut.
