An active volcano near Bandung, a turquoise crater lake on Mount Patuha and the coastal scenery of Pangandaran show how varied a trip through West Java can be. The Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark and places where Sundanese traditions are maintained add to the mix. So if you are looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first consider whether nature, water, culture or a combination of these should be the main focus of your stay.

Geopark landscapes between mountains and sea

The Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark is located on the island of Java in the western part of Sukabumi Regency. Its geological setting is particularly striking: a tectonically active subduction zone runs here between the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates. Both plates continue to converge at 4 mm per year. Waterfalls, beaches, geysers, rivers and mountains are among the geopark’s landscapes, as are a wildlife reserve and turtle conservation areas. You will therefore find a wide variety of natural scenery here within a geopark context.

Activities range from water to forest: surfing, paragliding, rafting and canoeing are among the options, as are climbing at waterfalls, snorkeling, diving and fishing. Forest trekking rounds out the selection. These differences can help you choose where to stay: look for a holiday rental where the focus is on what you want to do on your trip, rather than treating the different experiences as a single excursion area.

River landscapes and volcanic craters

Ciwidey combines a cool climate with strawberry plantations and a scenic landscape crossed by a river. The Ciwidey River is 20 km long; its strong current, numerous large boulders and waterfalls define it. The river is a destination for riverboarding. Rafting and riverboarding on the Ciwidey River are recommended only during the dry season. Bear this restriction in mind if river activities are to be an important part of your trip.

The volcanic landscapes near Bandung offer a different natural experience. Gunung Tangkuban Perahu is an active volcano near the city, with views of craters. Kawah Putih, on the other hand, is a crater lake on Mount Patuha at an altitude of 2,386 meters. Its turquoise water and the surrounding mist give it a character of its own. If you enjoy seeing volcanic landscapes, you can include these two destinations in your travel plans as different examples: the active volcano with its crater views and the high-altitude lake.

Pangandaran: Coast, nature and local cuisine

Pangandaran is located on a peninsula on the south coast of West Java. In addition to the beach, options described there include a fresh fish market and bicycle rentals. At the market, you can buy seafood and have it grilled or fried as you prefer. Rental shops offer regular bicycles, BMX bikes and tandem bikes for two or three people. This makes it possible to combine interests in the coast, food and cycling during a stay in Pangandaran without making the same activity the main focus.

A forested hill beside Pangandaran beach is home to monkeys, deer, buffalo and other exotic animals. At its summit is a waterfall that plunges directly into the sea. The waves at Pananjung Beach are calm; the beach is suitable for family activities and for safe swimming. For a family holiday, this specific description of the beach is a useful point of reference, while the hill, its animals and the waterfall offer a different natural highlight.

The Green Canyon also offers a distinctive river experience: river trips take place there in wooden boats called “Ketinting.” Above twin cliffs on both banks of the river lies a three-meter-wide natural bridge. Choosing accommodation based on the landscape and experiences you want can help you distinguish between river trips, the coast and volcanic nature, rather than searching only for a general idea of a holiday in West Java.

Sundanese culture and choosing where to stay

In addition to natural experiences, West Java offers access to Sundanese culture. Saung Angklung Udjo in Bandung preserves traditional Sundanese art and culture. Several cultural village communities in the Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark continue to maintain ancestral Kasepuhan traditions, including rice cultivation known as “tatanen.” These two examples highlight different aspects of culture: the preservation of traditional art in one place, and inherited community traditions and rice cultivation in another.

The geopark in western Sukabumi Regency combines geological features with landscapes and activities ranging from beach to forest. These focal points can help you choose the right part of West Java for your trip.
