Tulamben: Wreck, Water and a River Pebble Beach
Accommodation in Tulamben
Tulamben combines experiences in the water with a coastline that is distinctly different from a sandy beach. Diving and snorkelling opportunities, the wreck of the USS Liberty off Tulamben, and Pantai Tulamben with its smooth river stones represent different aspects of the destination. When planning, you might therefore first consider which aspect interests you most: the sea, the ship’s history or the distinctive nature of the shoreline.
Water, a Wreck and a Rocky Shore
The water is considered clear year-round and the currents calm; actual conditions may vary. Bear in mind when planning your day that local conditions can vary. This makes the water an important point of reference without letting a general description presume what any particular day will be like.
The wreck of the USS Liberty lies off Tulamben at a depth of 30 metres. The American merchant ship was hit by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine on 11 January 1942 while sailing through the Lombok Strait and sank. This story connects the town’s focus on diving and snorkelling with a specific event in maritime history.
Pantai Tulamben has no sandy beach, but a beach of smooth river stones of various sizes that are safe to walk on. The nature of the shoreline is therefore as much a part of Tulamben’s character as its experiences in the water and the history of the wreck.
