Karangasem combines a city-centred cultural focus in Amlapura with other cultural and nature themes across the wider Karangasem destination. At the heart of Amlapura are a historic palace and a Hindu temple; beyond that, the themes range from rituals and salak cultivation to diving and snorkelling areas. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your trip.

Palace and Temple in the Centre of Amlapura

Puri Agung Karangasem is located in the centre of Amlapura. The first king of Karangasem, Anak Agung Gede Jelantik, had the palace built in the 19th century. Its architecture combines Balinese, Chinese and European styles. This combination makes the building interesting to travellers who want to explore the interplay of different architectural influences.

Pura Jagatnatha is also located in the city centre: the public Hindu temple stands at the junction of Jalan Ngurah Rai and Jalan Patih Jelantik in Lingkungan Tampuagan. The palace and temple offer different cultural perspectives. If you want to focus on Amlapura’s cultural history, these two city-centre sites can help guide your search for a holiday rental.

Other Aspects of the Wider Karangasem Destination

At the Samsara Living Museum in Jungutan, Bebandem, Kabupaten Karangasem, the life cycle of Balinese people is presented through rituals and ritual objects. At least 14 Hindu ceremonies are featured there through photographs with explanations and ritual objects. Balinese food is sold to tourists. Another historical landmark is Taman Wisata Tirta Gangga, built in 1948 by the ruler of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem Agung.

Agrowisata Abian Salak, a salak agrotourism attraction, is located in Sibetan, Bebandem, Kabupaten Karangasem. Fifteen salak varieties grow in the village, including Salak Nenas and Salak Gula Pasir. The Karangasem Festival also provides a cultural connection to Amlapura: the 2026 edition celebrated the city’s anniversary. Its programme included arts events, traditional performances, exhibitions by small and medium-sized businesses, and activities by community groups.

Underwater World and Snorkelling

In the wider Karangasem destination, Tulamben Beach is a diving and snorkelling area with striking underwater scenery. The 120-metre-long USAT Liberty, a wreck from the Second World War, lies there. It is used for diving and snorkelling and provides a habitat for marine life. At Jemeluk Bay, visitors can snorkel directly from the beach. The two examples offer different experiences: at Tulamben, diving and snorkelling take place around the wreck, while at Jemeluk Bay, it is possible to snorkel from the beach.

This gives you a thematic comparison when choosing a location: Amlapura is known for palace and temple history in the city centre, while Sibetan, Tulamben and Jemeluk Bay are associated with the respective salak and marine themes described above. Begin your search for a holiday rental by considering which of these focuses matters most for your trip.
