Kushinagar
Accommodation in Kushinagar
Kushinagar combines significant Buddhist monuments with temples reflecting different architectural styles and a museum of archaeological finds. Families can plan their visits around their own interests: the monumental Buddha statues tell the story of the place, while shrines and temples showcase different forms of Buddhist architecture. This makes Kushinagar a destination for travelers looking for a holiday apartment and wanting to focus their stay on culture and historic sites.
Monuments in Three Groups
The monuments of Kushinagar are arranged in three groups. The main site includes the main stupa and the Nirvana Temple; the Matha Kuar Shrine and the Rambhar Cremation Stupa are also part of the group. This arrangement gives your visit a thematic focus without requiring you to view all the structures from a single perspective. You can start with the main site, then explore the shrine or the stupa as separate stops.
The Mahanirvana Main Stupa is 19.81 meters high. Its remains were discovered during excavations led by A.C.L. Carlleyle in 1876–1877. The Ramabhar Stupa is 15 meters high and marks the place where Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana, or final enlightenment. The small stupas in the southern group also tell of how the sacred monuments were used: pilgrims erected them as tokens of their devout visits.
Buddha Statues and Temple Architecture
A particularly clear difference can be seen between the statues at two shrines. The reclining Buddha statue recovered at the Mahanirvana site is 6.1 meters long and was carved as a monolithic sculpture from a single block of sandstone. A 3.05-meter-high Buddha statue is enshrined at the Matha Kunwar Shrine. The present Matha Kunwar Shrine was built in 1927 AD. If you are traveling with children, the size of the sculptures and the different materials provide concrete starting points for conversations about art and architectural history during your visit.
The temples also offer a range of distinctive features. The Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple is a joint project of the AIK World Buddhist Culture Association Japan and the Sri Lanka Buddhist Centre. Its main shrine is on the first floor: the domed brick structure is reached by a staircase. The Indo-Japan Srilanka Temple houses an eight-metal Buddha statue brought from Japan. The Chinese Temple combines Chinese and Vietnamese architectural design and includes replicas of shrines from the four important Buddhist pilgrimage sites of Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar. This lets you discover both architectural forms and connections to other pilgrimage destinations as you explore.
Museum, Water Features and Visitor Information
The Kushinagar Museum houses statues, sculptures, seals, coins, banners and other antiquities from archaeological excavations. One of its main attractions is a stucco image of Buddha in the Gandhara style. A visit to the museum thus complements the monuments with archaeological finds and works of art. Travelers with different interests can choose their focus accordingly: archaeological objects, temple architecture or the large Buddha statues.
Water is also part of the local landscape: the Linh-Son Vietnam Chinese Buddhist Temple has lotus ponds. The Meditation Park has water features and is near the Mahaparinirvana Shrine. These two places add distinctive landscape features alongside the stupas and temples. A holiday apartment in Kushinagar is particularly suited to a trip that allows time to visit Buddhist sites and cultural attractions; you can arrange specific visits around your personal interests.
