Tiruvallur between lagoon, birdlife and temple traditions
Accommodation in Tiruvallur
Tiruvallur brings together natural and cultural themes that can shape a trip in very different ways: Pulicat Lake is known for its brackish-water lagoon and birdlife, while temples and historic sites tell stories of religious traditions and former trade relations. Gudiyum Cave near Poondi also offers a distinct perspective on the region. Whichever of these aspects interests you most can be a good starting point for planning your trip and looking for a suitable holiday rental.
Pulicat Lake: Lagoon and birdlife
Pulicat Lake is a large brackish-water lagoon and the second-largest lagoon in South India. It lies partly in Tamil Nadu and partly in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The period from October to March is particularly noteworthy for birdlife: many birds regularly gather along the shores during these months. Nature enthusiasts can take this seasonal feature into account when planning their trip; it marks a distinct time of year, rather than an experience that is the same throughout the year.
Fishing-boat trips are a way to explore the Pulicat Lake area. This gives visitors two different ways to experience the lake: observing the shoreline and exploring by boat. The lighthouse in Pulicat stands opposite Pulicat Lake and is another prominent landmark in the town. For travellers especially interested in the lagoon and its birdlife, Pulicat is therefore a natural focus for a trip to Tiruvallur.
Crafts and history in Pulicat
Pulicat’s history can be traced through its various sites and traditions. Our Lady of Glory Shrine Church was founded around 1500 AD. The Dutch cemetery is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Dutch also built a fort in Pulicat in 1609, called “Geldira”, to trade with the East Indies. Together, these structures tell of religious and historical influences that differ clearly from the lakeside landscape.
Local crafts today include products made from palmyra leaves. Women in Pulicat, particularly from Muslim communities, make these items, which are exported by the local Palmyra Leaf Co-operative Society. This craft adds an economic and cultural dimension of life in Pulicat to the historical sites. Travellers who enjoy discovering both landscapes and local traditions will find two distinct areas of interest here, without needing to combine them into a single experience.
Temples and religious traditions
In Tiruttani, the temple is one of the six Padaiveedus of the god Murugan. The Arulmigu Subramaniya Swami Temple crowns a single rock at an elevation of 700 feet above sea level. Its place among the six Padaiveedus and its position on the rock give the site a distinct religious and scenic identity. At midnight on December 31 each year, many devotees gather at the temple on the sacred Tanikai Hill to receive Darshan.
Other temples represent their own distinct traditions. The Bhavani Amman Temple in Periyapalayam attracts many devotees on weekends, as well as during the Tamil month of Aadi and the month of Avani. Angapradakshinam, Vaepanjalai and Garagam are practised there. Sri Veeraraghava Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu. Its chariot festival and float festival take place in the Tamil month of Chittirai, in March or April. A 32-foot-tall statue of Sri Viswaroopa Panchamukha Anjaneyaswami is carved from a solid block of monolithic green granite.
Poondi, Gudiyum Cave and getting around
Gudiyum Cave near Poondi was discovered by the geologist Sir Robert Bruce Foote and is considered the first of its kind in India. The route there follows adventurous trails through quiet forests. The cave offers a different focus for a trip than the lagoon or temples: its discovery story and the forest trails described here are especially appealing to travellers interested in historic discoveries and paths through a forest landscape. Poondi Reservoir, also known as the Sathyamoorthy Reservoir, lies on the Kotralai River in Tiruvallur district.
For rail travel to Pulicat, Ponneri is relevant because it is the nearest railway station. Local trains run frequently from Chennai Central. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Tiruvallur, first consider which themes are most important to your trip: the lagoon and its seasonal birdlife, temple traditions or the discovery story of Gudiyum Cave.
