Discover Thoothukudi
Accommodation in Thoothukudi
A long, curving coastline and a historic pearl-fishing tradition shape Thoothukudi district. The district also has diverse habitats along the Gulf of Mannar, as well as temples, churches and festivals. If you want to choose between nature experiences, culture and religious sites for your trip, the district offers a range of themes to consider when looking for a suitable holiday apartment or holiday home.
Coast and marine nature
The Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve encompasses a remarkably varied coastal landscape: it includes beaches, seaweed beds, small deltas, backwaters, creeks and mudflats, as well as seagrass meadows, coral reefs, salt marshes and mangroves. The protected area extends across the districts of Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram. Its varied landforms give the marine region its distinctive character, ranging from wet coastal habitats to reefs and seagrass beds.
The reserve is home to dugongs, whale sharks, sea turtles and dolphins. Coral reefs and seagrass are also associated with the area’s high ecotourism potential. Nature is therefore a distinct focus for your trip alongside the coast itself. The district also includes the Teris and nearby coral islands. Tall, densely vegetated palmyrah groves form another characteristic feature of the landscape. If you are especially interested in coastal landscapes and marine nature, you can make these themes a priority when choosing your destination, while temples and historic sites offer a different focus.
Temples, churches and history
Kazhugumalai has two notable destinations for visitors interested in cultural history: the Jain temple there features depictions of Adinatha, Neminatha, Mahavira, Parvanatha and Bahubali. Vettuvan Kovil, a preserved monolithic Pandya temple, is also in Kazhugumalai. It is considered the only surviving monolithic Pandya temple. The two sites represent different religious traditions and give your trip a cultural focus.
The Navathirupathi shrines also bring together temple architecture and religious significance. All nine Vishnu temples are in Thoothukudi district; they are known for their stone carvings and architecture. The coastal temple at Thiruchendur is one of the six abodes of the god Muruga. In Thoothukudi, Panimaya Matha Church was built by the Portuguese in 1711. Urns and small clay vessels have been found at Adichanallur on the Tamirabarani River. Kattabomman Memorial Fort was built in 1974.
Festivals and religious occasions
Several festivals add dates of their own to the cultural calendar. The Veerapandia Kattabomman Festival takes place every year in the second week of May. The Panimaya Matha Church festival is celebrated annually on 5 August. In Manapad, the Holy Cross Church stands on a cliff and attracts thousands of pilgrims throughout the year. The Manapad church festival takes place from 1 to 14 September and attracts tourists. If you want to plan your trip around a particular festival, these different dates provide a useful basis for your planning.
