Washim brings together striking landscapes and a diverse religious and cultural heritage. In the district, sections of the Deccan Plateau, with its hills and plains, meet an environment shaped by rivers. At the same time, museums, temples and memorials tell of different communities and traditions. When planning a trip, you can therefore first consider whether you would particularly like to focus on Banjara culture, pilgrimage sites or the landscape.

Banjara history and living traditions

In Poharadevi, the four-storey Banjara Virasat Nangara Museum is devoted to the history, culture and traditions of the Banjara community. Thirteen galleries display historical exhibits about the Banjara way of life. This allows you to explore the museum visit in greater depth: the exhibition focuses not only on individual objects, but also on a community and its way of life. The museum also presents a light, music and laser show every evening.

Banjara history and religious remembrance are also central in Pohradevi. This is where the Samadhi, the memorial to the revered Banjara saint and social reformer Sant Sewalal Maharaj, is located. The Jagdamba Devi Temple is also in Pohradevi and attracts devotees who come to seek blessings. Those interested in Banjara religious and cultural traditions will find several different points of interest here.

Temples and pilgrimage traditions

The Antariksha Parshwanath Jain Temple is dedicated to Lord Parshwanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism, and attracts thousands of pilgrims each year. According to Jain tradition, the idol floated in the air, marking the place where the temple was to be built in 1142 AD. This tradition gives the site special significance in the temple’s religious history.

Other pilgrimage traditions are associated with the temple of Shri Kanifnath Maharaj in Savargaon and the Jholebaba Sansthan in Chikhali. The temple grounds in Savargaon are on a high hill. A staircase leads from the entrance to the lower area; the temple can also be reached from the south via a paved road. A nine-day pilgrimage event is held there every year on Datta Purnima. The Jholebaba Sansthan is the Samadhi of Sant Jhole Baba. Devotees queue there for darshan on every full moon; the annual Poush Pournima Yatra Mahotsav is also held there, attracting many devotees who receive Mahaprasad.

The Balaji Temple and the Hemadpanthi Murudeshwar Temple in Rithad also reflect different aspects of the region’s religious heritage. The Balaji Temple has a spacious paved courtyard, a well-developed veranda for pilgrims and a bhandara for Brahmins. Around 1760, one of the buried idols associated with the temple was discovered by chance by a horseman. In Rithad, the village community renovated the Hemadpanthi Murudeshwar Temple without moving the original idol.

Rivers, reservoir and the Deccan Plateau

The Penganga is the main river flowing through Washim District. The district’s landscape includes hills and plains, as well as hilly and undulating terrain near riverbanks. The region is therefore characterized by a variety of landscapes rather than a single dominant setting.

A notable example of the connection between water infrastructure and its uses is the Sonal or Sonala Dam on the Aran River, a tributary of the Godavari. The earth-fill dam is near Mangrulpir in Washim District. The reservoir holds water year-round and is used for domestic and agricultural purposes, as well as fish farming. This offers a clear contrast to consider when planning your trip: you can get to know Washim mainly through its religious and cultural sites, or focus more on its rivers, reservoir and the terrain of the Deccan Plateau.

Planning your trip

MSRTC buses connect Washim with other cities. State bus services operate, among other places, from Malegaon, Mangrulpir, Manora, Risod, Hingoli and Pusad. Adoli is also among the places in Washim District: Adoli Adoli.

When choosing a holiday rental in Washim, it may help to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your trip: Banjara history and religious traditions offer different interests from the landscape along the Penganga or the Sonal Dam. The places and themes described here give you a concrete basis for deciding whether Washim is a good fit for the trip you are planning.
