Palghar: Coast, Sahyadri and Warli Culture
Accommodation in Palghar
Different landscapes meet in Palghar district: beaches along the Arabian Sea lie to the west, while the Sahyadri mountain ranges rise to the east. The coastline stretches for 112 kilometres. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether you would most like to experience coastal scenery, mountains, cultural discoveries or a mix of these. Other defining features of the region include Warli art, historic forts and local traditions.
The Coast, Chikoo and Seaside Activities
In Bordi, the chikoo orchards are a tourist attraction in their own right. Visitors can stroll through the green groves and sample fresh chikoo fruit. The annual Chikoo Festival in February is an opportunity to discover chikoo products and local art. Those interested in regional produce and handicrafts will find a different way to experience the area here than on a trip focused mainly on forts or mountain scenery.
Jetskiing, boating and canoeing are available on the Arabian Sea at Bordi. These offerings complement the coastal views with activities on the water. In Dahanu, the Mahalakshmi Temple is associated with the traditional Tarpa dance during festival periods. A 15-day Mahalakshmi Yatra also takes place there, beginning on Hanuman Jayanti. Chikoo, art and dance give a trip a cultural and culinary dimension, too.
The Sahyadri Mountains and Waterfalls
Suryamal Tourism Center is a scenic hill destination in the Sahyadri Mountains. Visitors come for sunrise and sunset, and for the waterfalls during the monsoon season. There are trekking opportunities in the nearby mountains. If you would like to make mountain scenery and hiking activities the focus of your stay, Suryamal is one of the places to consider when planning your trip.
Dabhosa Waterfall plunges nearly 300 feet amid dense forests. Activities offered at the waterfall include rappelling, a valley crossing, trekking, kayaking, a Burma Bridge, laddering, night walks and jungle cooking. The options range from physical activities and crossings to evening pursuits. On the ascent to Kamandurg, four streams must be crossed; the third is 40 feet wide. Kamandurg is covered in dense forest and offers a view of Vasai Creek. Kaldurg Fort is a hilltop fort on a ridge about 1,550 feet high, with a rectangular summit.
Warli Art and Historic Sites
Warli painting is part of the cultural heritage of the district’s tribal communities. Its motifs depict customs, scenes from everyday life, weddings, dances, festivals and events in nature. In Jawhar, visitors can explore local villages where artisans practise Warli art, watch artists at work and learn more about the history of the paintings. The art in Jawhar uses natural colours and complex geometric patterns. Those interested in design and local traditions can take this focus into account when choosing where to stay, alongside the coast and nature.
The forts, too, differ in their described features. Tarapur Fort is located in the village of Boisar in Palghar Taluka. Its grounds include wells and gardens, as well as historic remains of a church and a Dominican monastery. The walls of Vasai Fort are over 4.5 kilometres long, and the fort also has eleven bastions. Arnala Fort, also known as Jaldurg or Janjire Arnala, was built by Mahmud Begda in 1516 and is surrounded by water. Inside the fort are temples dedicated to Tryambakeshwar, Bhavani Mata, Kalika Mata and Mahadev. Notable features of Shirgaon Fort include its renovation by the Portuguese, its present condition as a ruin, hidden caves and a rare multi-trunk palm tree. Jai Vilas Palace, also called Raj Bari, was the royal residence of the rulers of Mukne; it features neoclassical architecture and extensive gardens.
Places and Travel Information
There is specific travel information for some destinations. Vasai Road railway station is the closest station to Vasai Fort; local auto-rickshaws and buses run from there to the fort. Igatpuri is the closest railway station to Jawhar, about 60 kilometres away. Jawhar is connected to major cities in Maharashtra by road, rail and air. This information can help with planning if, before choosing a holiday rental, you consider which destinations and routes matter for your trip.
