Sohna: Architecture, Hot Springs and History
Accommodation in Sohna
Sohna combines historic architecture with the history of hot springs, whose water was once used for bathing. This offers several starting points for a trip: the architecture, named tombs and the history of bathing facilities. Those interested in historic places can focus on the mosques and tombs, or also explore the history of the springs. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first consider whether Sohna itself should be the focus of your plans or whether you would also like to include a destination outside the town.
Buildings with Different Dates
Among the buildings is Gora Barak, formerly called Khamba, with a mosque attached; both are said to date from 1301. The Dargarh of Nazzam-ul-Haqq comprises a tomb and a mosque made of red and buff-coloured sandstone, bearing the date 1461. Gora Barak and its mosque are believed to have been built in 1301; the buildings at the Dargarh of Nazzam-ul-Haqq bear the date 1461. West of Sohna are also the tombs known as Lal and Kala Gubaz. The range therefore extends from mosques associated with a building or complex to the named tombs west of the town.
Hot Springs and Former Bathing Facilities
A dome, considered very old, stands above the hot springs in the centre of Sohna. Water from the springs was channelled into concrete pools where visitors could bathe. A sauna, sulphur baths, steam baths and a small swimming pool were also among the facilities at a spa complex in Sohna. The water was once believed to have healing effects on skin infections, gout and rheumatism. The springs therefore bring together several aspects: their central location, the dome above them, former bathing facilities and a historical belief in the effects of the water.
A Later Chapter in the Town’s History
The newly built tourism complex in Sohna was ceremonially inaugurated on 21 March 1973. Alongside the buildings associated with 1301 and the date 1461, this marks a later, clearly dated period in the town’s history. The buildings and the inauguration represent different historical points of reference and can be considered as separate themes when planning a trip.
Sohna and Damdama Lake
Damdama Lake is another place to consider: it lies 8 km from Sohna. The Haryana Tourism Corporation built a tourist centre there. This creates a clear distinction in your plans between the buildings and history of the springs in Sohna and a destination outside the town. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Sohna, you can make the town’s history the focus and include the lake as a separate stop in your itinerary. This lets you choose the emphasis you want, between historic buildings, the former use of the springs and the additional destination by the lake.
