Nuvem: Church Art and Local History
Accommodation in Nuvem
Church architecture, religious art and local history shape Nuvem’s cultural character. The changes are particularly tangible at the Jesus, Mary and Joseph Church: the new church was built beside the old church building and inaugurated on December 30, 2023, by Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa. The Mae dos Pobres Church offers another architectural perspective. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Nuvem, these themes provide a concrete way to gauge whether the place suits the focus of your stay.
Churches and Local History
An early chapter in Nuvem’s church history is linked to a specific date: in 1695, Jose Colaco, a Ganvkar from Margao, built the first chapel on his property in Nuvem, next to his house. He dedicated it to the Holy Family and the Mother of the Poor. The date, founder and dual dedication make this foundation a distinctive historical detail.
The Mae dos Pobres Church in Nuvem features Neo-Romanesque and Mannerist architectural elements. Its façade is divided into three sections by pilasters and openings. The style and clear division offer two concrete starting points for anyone interested in taking a closer look at the architecture.
In the Jesus, Mary and Joseph Church, the main altar depicts the Holy Family, as well as the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary; the crucified Jesus is shown in the center. A mural in the church depicts Jesus calming the waters. A monument to Christ the King stands in front of the church. It was erected by the Nuvem Mae de Deus Pobres Club of Mumbai; Archbishop and Patriarch Dom Jose Vieira Alvenaz blessed the monument on October 25, 1953.
Old and New Churches
The new Jesus, Mary and Joseph Church makes its own mark with its design: its curved roof evokes the outline of Noah’s Ark, and the glass façade at the front features a stained-glass image of the Holy Family. The old church building was converted into a place of worship. In this way, different chapters of church history meet in Nuvem, while the two buildings serve different purposes.
The Jesus, Mary and Joseph Church can accommodate around 1,500 people and has a gallery with around 300 seats. The old church building had 200 to 250 seats. Ramps along the sides of the church make access easier for older people and people with disabilities. On the north side, there is an area where mothers with babies and children can attend services.
There is an additional hall in the basement. The parish can use it for larger gatherings and social programs, as well as other church activities.
Another Look at Nuvem
Automotive history is also part of the local scene. A 2016 report described Ashvek Vintage World in Nuvem as a vintage car museum with more than 50 classic cars and called it Goa’s only museum of its kind. If this is an important part of your trip, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.
