South Goa: Nature, Beaches and Culture
Accommodation in South Goa
South Goa has many different sides: its coastline is home to beaches such as Agonda, Palolem and Colva; at the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, the landscape is shaped by forests and the gently rolling slopes of the Western Ghats. There are also temple traditions, museums and places where Goa’s village life and history come to life. Which of these experiences particularly interests you can also guide your search for a suitable place to stay in a holiday apartment.
Forest Landscapes and Beaches
The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Canacona Taluk, in South Goa District. Densely forested slopes provide a setting for wildlife that includes mainly bison, or gaur, sambar deer, chital deer, wild boar, langurs and Hanuman langurs. Those interested in nature and wildlife will find a different focus here from the region’s beaches.
Agonda Beach is considered a picturesque, secluded beach and is very popular for its tranquil atmosphere. This appeals to travellers who want to make a peaceful beach the focus of their trip planning. Palolem Beach lies west of Chaudi in Canacona Taluk, with the Western Ghats as its backdrop. Colva Beach, in turn, is located in Colva Village in Salcete Taluk, South Goa District. These location details help distinguish the coastal destinations without grouping them together as a single stretch of beach.
Temples, Traditions and Museums
In Canacona stands Shree Mallikarjun, which is said to have been built by ancestors of the Kshatriya Samaj in the mid-16th century. Massive wooden pillars with elaborate carvings define the temple; 60 deities are located around it. Festivals associated with Shree Mallikarjun include Rathasaptami in February and Shigmotsav in March or April. Both attract large crowds. The festival dates and elaborately carved pillars give the place a cultural character that is clearly distinct from a stay focused on the forest or beach.
Near Netravali is Budbudyanchi Tali, a sacred bubble tank attached to the Gopinath Temple. Locally, the tank is also known as Budbud Talli or Bomadyanchi Talli. Those interested in local religious traditions can consider this site alongside the region’s temples and heritage sites.
The Rachol Seminary stands on the banks of the Zuari River in South Goa. A church was built there first, in 1521, followed by a prison. From 1574 to 1610, it was developed into a seminary for philosophy and theology; today, it houses the Museum of Christian Art. The Naval Aviation Museum traces the development of Indian naval aviation over several decades through exhibits outdoors and in a two-storey indoor exhibition.
In Loutolim, Ancestral Goa (Big Foot), an open-air cultural and heritage site, brings Goa’s traditional past, village life and folk culture to life. Also in Loutolim, The Big Foot Art Gallery & Local Handicarfts Centre showcases works by local artists, including paintings, artefacts, items made from bamboo, cane, clay and terracotta, as well as handmade clothing and souvenirs. The Big Foot Eat-out serves Goan cuisine with spices, vegetables and fruits from its own spice and fruit gardens.
In Partagali, a banyan tree is revered by local people and those from the surrounding region. An old banyan tree associated with the Shree Saunsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math is about 200 × 225 feet in size and has been considered a Tapasya Kshetra for more than 1,000 years. Its traditional significance and approximate size make it a special point of interest for travellers interested in religious traditions.
Getting Your Bearings and Getting There
Margao is connected by rail to the rest of India and to Mormugao Harbour. National highways also connect the city with Maharashtra and Karnataka. This makes Margao an important point of reference for rail and road connections when planning your trip. Another guided excursion is The Goan Hinterland Experience: the trail lasts 3.5 hours and starts at Shri Damodar Sansthaan Zambaulim in Quepem. If you weigh nature, the coast, culture or access differently when choosing a holiday apartment, you can use these interests as a basis for comparing places in South Goa.
