Canacona brings together very different experiences: its beaches range from quiet, secluded stretches to bays with distinctive landscapes. Inland, the forested slopes of the Western Ghats await; the Mallikarjun Temple adds a cultural dimension to your trip. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay – the coast, nature or temple culture.

Beaches with their own character

Patnem Beach is a quiet, secluded beach in Canacona. Cabo de Rama Beach, also called Khola Beach, is another secluded beach in Canacona. At Galgibag Beach, the coast meets the Galgibag River: the beach lies on its banks and is also a protected nesting site for endangered olive ridley turtles. There are almost no beach huts there. If you would like to combine a beach stay with an appreciation of efforts to protect this nesting site, you’ll find a special connection with nature here.

Golden sand and volcanic rock formations shape the scenery at Cola Beach. A small hill divides the beach into North Khola and South Khola; the lagoon in the middle is known as the Blue Lagoon or Emerald Lagoon. Butterfly Beach is different: it is a small bay surrounded by dense tree cover. It is mostly accessible by speedboat from nearby beaches; dolphins can also be spotted there. These varied beach landscapes can help you decide which coastal setting you would like to prioritize when choosing where to stay.

At Palolem Beach, white sand borders a blue bay between two headlands. Fishermen offer dolphin-watching trips; visitors can also ask them to ferry them across by boat. The beach is three kilometres from Canacona railway station on the Konkan Railway. North of Talpona Beach, the Talpona River flows into the Arabian Sea – another striking coastal feature in the area.

Forest and wildlife inland

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the undulating, densely forested slopes of the Western Ghats. It is located in Canacona Taluka in South Goa District, just under three kilometres from National Highway 17 between Panaji and Mangalore. Wildlife in the sanctuary includes gaurs, sambar deer, chital deer, wild boar, porcupines, langurs and bonnet macaques. The sanctuary offers a marked contrast to the region’s beaches, with forested slopes and diverse wildlife taking centre stage. If nature experiences are a priority on your trip, you can factor this into your search for a holiday apartment.

Discover temples and history

Mallikarjun Temple lies near the small village of Sristhal in Canacona, the southernmost taluka. The temple building features carved wooden pillars; the six pillars in the mandap depict scenes from the Puranas and the Mahabharata. The temple’s setting in a valley completely surrounded by blue mountains and lush greenery is also part of its character.

During the annual Jatra, the deity’s image is carried in a procession to nearby Kindlebag Beach, a journey lasting almost two to three hours. This connects temple tradition with a specific coastal setting. If you are interested in culture and religious traditions, you can include this aspect in your travel plans alongside beaches and nature experiences.

Another historical site is Cabo De Rama Fort, a ruined citadel that contains several rusty Portuguese cannons. Its western cliffs drop steeply to the sea and offer views to the north and south. You will need to arrange your own transport to reach the fort. This is useful to know when planning a visit.

Choose the focus of your stay

When searching for a holiday apartment, it helps to organize the experiences described above according to the kind of trip you want. The beaches offer a variety of landscapes; at Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, the focus is on forest and wildlife, while Mallikarjun Temple features woodcarving and tradition. You can also factor in the specific details about the railway station, speedboats and arranging your own transport, rather than choosing places solely for their coastal or natural scenery. For a sense of the area, you can also consider the place of the same name, Canacona.
