Begusarai brings together a distinctive landscape, religious sites and vibrant traditions. In the district on the northern bank of the Ganges, the historic region of Mithila forms part of the cultural setting. When planning a trip, you can choose to focus on nature, temple visits or a festival held during the year—and tailor your search for a holiday rental accordingly.

Kanwar Lake and Birdlife

Kanwar Lake, a natural freshwater wetland near Manjhaul, lies in the vicinity of Begusarai. It is 22 km northwest of the district headquarters. The Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary was established in 1987 and covers approximately 70 km². The area is therefore shaped not only by the lake, but also by the sanctuary that bears its name. During the winter season, Kanwar Lake attracts thousands of birds. This seasonal change gives the landscape its own rhythm: nature enthusiasts can make winter a particular focus of their trip, while the place remains interesting as a wetland regardless of any one travel purpose.

Jai Mangla Garh is also part of the surrounding area. It lies on an island near Kabar Lake. A black statue of the goddess Chandi Mangla Devi is enshrined in the temple there. The island location and the temple’s religious significance are two distinct aspects of this place: its unusual geographical setting and the worship of the goddess. If you are interested in both, you can consider Jai Mangla Garh as a cultural focus in its own right alongside the wetland, without combining the two experiences into a single outing.

Temples and Religious Traditions

Another temple site is in Bishanpur, in Begusarai district: the Naulakha Temple is located there. Together with the temple at Jai Mangla Garh, it shows that religious sites are among the area’s important cultural points of interest. The two places are not interchangeable: at Jai Mangla Garh, the statue of the goddess Chandi Mangla Devi is a specific feature of the temple; the Naulakha Temple is identified by its location in Bishanpur. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose whether to visit a place associated with a named religious image or another temple site.

The month-long Shravani Mela is held at Baba Harigiridham in Gadhpura during the month of Sawan. During the festival, pilgrims come to Baba Harigiridham to receive Darshan and perform Jalabhishek. The Mela is a specific event tied to a particular time and place, bringing together religious practice and communal festivities. If you are interested in this tradition, the month of Sawan is the relevant reference point for planning your trip. The Shravani Mela offers a different perspective on Begusarai from the winter birdlife at Kanwar Lake: here, pilgrimage and religious worship take centre stage, while there, the focus is on the seasonal natural experience.
