Darbhanga district lies in the heart of Mithilanchal, in the fertile alluvial plains of northern India. Nature and culture reveal themselves here in very different ways: the Kusheshwar-Asthan Bird Sanctuary defines the natural landscape, while palaces, temples and festivals offer insights into the area's history and traditions.

Winter birdlife and a protected natural area

The Kusheshwar-Asthan Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in Darbhanga district and includes a freshwater lake. The adjoining areas also have ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, religious and natural significance. This natural area is therefore a destination in its own right for a trip that takes in not only palaces and temples but also the landscape and wildlife.

In winter, fifteen rare and endangered migratory bird species come to the area. They migrate here from Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Mongolia, Siberia and other countries. If you are particularly interested in migratory birds, you can take this seasonal aspect into account when planning your trip; the birdlife makes Darbhanga quite different from a trip focused exclusively on cultural history.

Palaces and temples in the Raj area

The Raj area of Darbhanga is a planned complex of palaces, temples, offices, parks, gardens and ponds. Its history includes Darbhanga Fort, also known as Raj Qila: it was once the residence of the royal Zamindar family of Darbhanga. The fort complex includes Nargona Palace, among other buildings. The different components give the Raj area a multifaceted character, rather than focusing on just one building.

Shyama Temple was built in 1933 and is located on the grounds of Lalit Narayan Mithila University. It is one kilometre west of Darbhanga railway station. The site is also associated with the celebrations of the annual Shyama-Mai festival: they take place in December at Shyama-Kali Temple, also known as Shyama Mai. This adds fixed seasonal events to the historic buildings.

Festivals and religious sites

Ahilya Gautam Mahotsav, also known as Ahilya Mahotsav, is an important state-level celebration. It takes place in the sacred village of Ahilya Asthan (Ahari), in the Jale block of Darbhanga district. The festival is also held at a site on the Ramayana Circuit. For travellers interested in religious traditions and festive occasions, it offers a cultural point of interest in its own right.

Smaller local landmarks also form part of the region's character: a Mahadeva temple stands on the banks of the Kamla River in a village in Bahadurpur block. Fairs are held there on Kartik and Maghi Purnima. In Darbhanga, Holy Rosary Church was founded in 1891. Its Anand Mela takes place on 7 October. You can prioritise these different places and events according to your interests, without combining them into a single main focus for your itinerary.

Getting oriented and travelling there

Maharaja Laxmiswar Singh Museum is open free of charge every day except Monday, from 10:00 to 15:30. These set opening days and times help you plan when to visit the museum. Together with the temples and the Raj area, it forms a cultural focus distinct from the sanctuary's winter birdlife.

Darbhanga is connected to the rest of the country by road, rail and air. Darbhanga Junction and Laheriasarai railway stations are located at the district headquarters. Darbhanga Airport offers connections to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune. When planning your trip, you can first decide which way of travelling suits you, and then choose which of the different places and themes you would like to focus on.

Choose the right base

Your travel interests are a helpful starting point when choosing a holiday apartment or house: will the birdlife at Kusheshwar-Asthan Bird Sanctuary be your main focus, or would you rather explore the palaces, temples, museum and festivals? Base your search on the places you actually want to visit.
