Coast, River Estuaries and Birdlife

Srikakulam District combines coastal landscapes with a rich history and vibrant religious traditions. Its coastline is 193 km long. At Kalingapatnam, the Vamsadhara meets the Bay of Bengal; Kalingapatnam Beach lies at this river estuary. Those interested in where river and sea meet will find a distinctive landscape feature here, while the coastline’s length gives a sense of the district as a whole.

Birdlife is another attraction in its own right. Between September and March, more than 3,000 pelicans and painted storks from Siberia visit Telineelapuram. The area around Tekkali Creek and the surroundings of Telineelapuram, Ijjuvaram and Naupada are home to 113 species of inland birds. For travellers who like to include nature watching in their explorations, the seasonal information about Telineelapuram provides a specific guide: the period runs from September to March.

Temples and Historic Sites

Arasavalli is known for the Sri Suryanarayana Swamy Temple, considered one of only two ancient sun temples in India. Twice a year, in March and September, sunlight falls on the feet of the deity there. Ratha Saptami, celebrated at the temple in February, is a separate event. These details give the place a distinctive religious and cultural character, while making clear that the dates should not be confused.

Another important pilgrimage site is Srikurmam. The Sri Kurmanatha Swamy Temple is considered the only temple of its kind in India and contains inscriptions dating from the 11th to the 19th century AD. The temple is 14.5 km southeast of Srikakulam City. This makes it possible to plan around both the temple’s distinctive tradition and its specific location in relation to the city.

The Nagavali, Suvarnamukhi and Vegavati rivers meet at Sangam. Sangam is also a pilgrimage site in Vangara Mandal, Srikakulam District. The Sangameswara Temple there is one of the five Linga Kshetras. At Salihundam, meanwhile, the excavated Buddhist remains include stupas, viharas, chaitya halls and a Maha Stupa. They date from the 2nd century BC to the 12th century AD. Travellers with a particular interest in Buddhist history will find a different historical focus here than at the temple sites.

Handicrafts and Regional Specialities

Ponduru is known for high-quality khadi, a fabric spun entirely by hand. Bronze craft is popular with both locals and tourists in Budithi. Visitors from India and abroad place orders there for items of their choice. The two places showcase different aspects of regional craftsmanship: hand-spun khadi and bronze work.

Mandasa is also associated with a distinctive local speciality: the town in Srikakulam District is known for Mandasa Palakova, a traditional medicinal sweet. This sweet adds a culinary discovery to the temples, nature and handicrafts, without attributing to it any unsubstantiated effects.

In Kalingapatnam, a historic British-era lighthouse still stands near the former port. In Baruva, two obelisks mark the former port. Each rises 50 feet above sea level; one is black and the other white. During festivals, thousands of people bathe in the sea at Baruva. These details bring together coastal history and festival traditions, but describe different aspects of the place.

Planning Your Trip

When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding whether temples and pilgrimage sites, Buddhist history, birdwatching, the coast or handicrafts will shape your stay. The places mentioned cater to clearly distinct interests; the Sri Kurmanatha Swamy Temple’s location 14.5 km southeast of the city also provides a specific reference point for Srikakulam City. You can also find the city of the same name under Srikakulam.

The nearest railway station is Srikakulam Road. It is 9 km from Srikakulam City and lies on the Vizag–Bhubaneswar route. The nearest airport is Visakhapatnam, 117 km from Srikakulam.
