Kurnool: Rocky Landscapes and a Living History
Accommodation in Kurnool
At the heart of Kurnool stands Konda Reddy Buruju. But the region’s story goes beyond the city’s history: its distinctive sights include igneous rock formations, caves, historic inscriptions and religious sites. As you plan your trip, you can choose your own focus, from nature experiences to places with a long cultural history.
Rocky Landscapes and Wildlife
Orvakallu Rock Garden is a 1,000-acre park centred on impressive igneous rock formations. Andhra Pradesh Tourism developed walking trails there. The park is located directly on National Highway 18. The Belum Caves offer a different perspective on the rocky landscape: their notable limestone formations include stalactites and stalagmites. If you’re interested in geological features, these offer two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: rock formations in the park and limestone formations in the caves.
A very different landscape characterises Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary. It lies in dry, gently undulating grasslands between the Nallamalai and Yerramalai hill ranges of the Eastern Ghats. Visitors can explore the wilderness and observe its diverse flora and fauna. More than 124 bird species live in the sanctuary, including the lesser florican, demoiselle crane, harriers and the great Indian bustard. For an outing here, the focus is on the birds of an open grassland—not the rock formations of Orvakallu Rock Garden or the Belum Caves.
Inscriptions, Collections and Architecture
The rock paintings at Kethavaram date back to the Palaeolithic period. In Jonnagiri, a striking granite rock bearing Ashokan inscriptions is located in the village. One of Ashoka’s eight major rock edicts is also located in Jonnagiri. The Ashoka panels near Jonnagiri are designated as a monument of Andhra Pradesh and are under the Archaeological Survey of India. These historic sites offer different ways to explore the past: prehistoric rock art and inscriptions from the time of Ashoka.
At Kurnool Museum, you can see artefacts and ancient relics. The museum’s stone sculptures come from Srisailam and date to the Chalukya and Vijayanagara periods. Gol Gummaz is the tomb of Abdul Wahab; it was probably built in 1618 after Wahab’s death. The Parasmani Parshwanath Jain Tirth in Peddatumbalam has idols dating from the 17th century. Its Jain temple was built in the style of the Jain temples of Nallagonda and Kolanupaka. The cultural points of interest therefore range from museum objects and a tomb to a temple with its own architectural tradition.
Temples, Pilgrimage Sites and Regional Discoveries
Several religious sites each have their own character. Sri Bugga Rameswara Swamy Temple is located in Kalvabugga, in Orvakal Mandal, Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh. Sri Yagantiswamy Temple in Yaganti houses an Ardhanareeswara figure carved from a single stone, bringing Shiva and Parvathi together. In Yaganti, Agastya Pushkarni also receives a continuous year-round supply of water from the foot of the hill. Pilgrims immerse themselves in its holy water as part of their religious practice.
Sri Lakshmi Jagannadha Gattu Cave Temple lies among hills in a lush, forested valley; its cave setting attracts tourists and pilgrims. Shaik Sha Vali Dargah in Ellarthi is a historic shrine dedicated to a revered Sufi saint, with a 400-year religious and spiritual history. If you want to focus on temples, caves or Sufi traditions, you can consider these places as distinct cultural highlights.
The location of individual sites may also influence your choice of holiday rental: would you like Kurnool itself, with Konda Reddy Buruju and the museum, to be your focus, or are you particularly interested in nature, inscriptions or religious sites in the places mentioned? A road runs across the Sunkesula Dam between the villages of Sunkesula and Rajoli. Take the specific destinations on your itinerary into account when choosing where to stay, rather than treating these different experiences as a single outing.
