Nalgonda offers a diverse range of discoveries: Buddhist structures and temples, museum collections, and the landscape along the Krishna River. Families planning a trip can choose between cultural sites and an outing on the water, depending on their interests. When choosing where to stay, it helps to keep your preferred destinations and the transport connections mentioned for them in mind.

Buddhist History and Museum Exhibits

Buddhist structures have been excavated at Nandikonda, including pillared halls and monasteries. The site is part of Telangana’s Buddhist tour offerings. Also in Nagarjuna Sagar, in Nalgonda District, is the Buddhist Heritage Museum at Buddhavanam Buddhist Theme Park. Its galleries display Gandhara and Pala sculptures, reproductions of Ajanta paintings, Buddhist thangkas and ceremonial bronzes. This collection offers a different way to engage with Buddhist heritage than the excavated structures at Nandikonda.

Another museum awaits you in Panagal: the District Heritage Museum was established in February 1982. Its exhibits date from the 2nd century AD to the 18th century AD. The collection includes sculptures, prehistoric tools, coins, bronzes, beads, weapons and inscribed copper plates. The broad time span and variety of objects make the museum a way to explore history through different forms of material evidence.

Temples and Forts with Distinctive Details

The Pachala Someswara Temple in Panagal is known for its intricately carved pillars: 70 pillars depict stories of Vishnu and Shiva. Four shrines are arranged around a shared, large rectangular mandapam. Those interested in temple architecture and religious depictions will find a distinct complement here to the Buddhist sites and museum collections.

The Chaya Someswara Temple in Panagal also features remarkable details. It was built by the Cholas in the 11th to 12th centuries. The temple is known for the shadow of one of its pillars continuously touching the main Shivalingam throughout the day; this is believed to explain its name. Reliefs on the pillars depict episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Deverakonda Fort, meanwhile, was built around the 13th and 14th centuries. Its grounds contain Rama and Shiva temples. By contrast, the ruins of a fort from the time of the Ikshvaku dynasty lie in Nandikonda.

The Krishna River and Nagarjuna Sagar

Nandikonda lies on the banks of the Krishna River in Nalgonda District. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is also in the district and was built across the Krishna River. Dense greenery surrounds the dam and adds to its impressive views. The Nalgonda area thus brings together historic sites and a landscape shaped by the river.

There are two different options for spending time on the water: Telangana Tourism operates a regular cruise service that travels on Nagarjunasagar Dam after heavy inflows, when water levels are sufficient. Motorboats also run between the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir and Nagarjunakonda Island. A one-way trip to Nagarjunakonda takes approximately 45 minutes. If you would like to include a boat trip in your itinerary, allow for this approximate travel time when planning your day; the cruise service requires sufficient water levels.

A Base for Exploring and Other Destinations

Buses run from Nalgonda to Nagarjuna Sagar; the distance is given as approximately 70 km. Panagal, home to the Pachala Someswara Temple, is about 4 km from the Nalgonda District headquarters and is easily accessible by road. These points of reference can help you weigh your preferred destinations against the best base for your trip. If you are mainly interested in exploring museums and temples, Panagal and its collections will be central to your choice; for a boat trip, routes towards Nagarjuna Sagar and Nagarjunakonda are relevant.
