Zhuhai: Discover Island Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Zhuhai
In the wider region around Zhuhai, island coastlines, striking rock formations and historic sites shape the landscape. Nature and water are just as central here as village history and cultural heritage.
Islands and Coastal Landscapes in the Wider Region
On Wailingding, striking peaks and rocks define the landscape. Unusual rock formations and rugged terrain were shaped by marine erosion; from Lingding Peak, the view stretches across the South China Sea. Dong'ao offers a different appeal: the island is known for its fine beaches, clear water and dense, pristine forest. The wider region therefore offers a choice of very different landscapes.
On Dong'ao, visitors can stroll along a forest boardwalk and cycle on the island’s ring road. They can also explore the ruins of a fortress. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and banana boat rides are offered at Nansha Bay; the availability of these water activities may vary seasonally. Before making specific plans, check current options and route conditions.
Qi'ao is associated with a provincial-level mangrove wetland park and a national reserve for Chinese white dolphins. These natural attractions complement the island coastlines with a focus on wetlands and species conservation. This information relates to the wider regional context of Qi'ao.
Village History and Living Traditions
In the wider region, Qi'ao brings together natural and cultural heritage. Its historic sights include the old fortress ruins on Baishi Street, the Tianhou Temple and the exhibition hall in Su Zhaozheng’s former residence. The Qi'ao Duanwu Procession of Prayers brings together shared village rituals, mutual visits, celebrations and processions for the Dragon Boat Festival and the four days leading up to it. The custom was added to the municipal list of representative elements of intangible cultural heritage in 2013 and to the provincial list in 2015. Zhong Jinping is named as a representative bearer of the tradition. Qi'ao silver shrimp paste is also on the municipal list of intangible cultural heritage elements.
In June 2016, the Qi'ao Village History Museum and the intangible cultural heritage transmission base opened in the Zhong Clan Ancestral Hall. The first edition of the “Zhuhai Origins” cultural route began on Qi'ao on 24 March 2026, running from Su Zhaozheng’s former residence and Baishi Street via the Wangchiling Path to the core area of the Houshawan archaeological site. For specific plans, check current access arrangements and any additional programming.
Tangjia is considered a historic and cultural town of China. Its historic buildings include the Ruizhi Ancestral Hall, the Wangci Building and the three temples of Tangjia. Cultural institutions such as the Tangjia Village History Museum and the Wuyong Centre for the Transmission of Traditional Handweaving add to the range of attractions. This makes Tangjia a different cultural focus from the island villages.
The old village of Huitong, at the foot of Fenghuangshan in the southwest of the Zhuhai High-Tech District, was founded in 1732. Many modern buildings in the Lingnan style have been preserved there, alongside historic traces of cultural exchange between China and the West. The restored main Mo Family Ancestral Hall houses the Huitong Village History Museum, which traces the village’s changes over a century. The renovated Tiaomei Ancestral Hall houses a small museum of Chinese and international film history.
Combine Experiences with Planning
In the wider region, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is located in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. The theme park officially opened on 29 March 2014. It has eight themed areas and combines rare marine animals, rides and large-scale stage shows. Experiences described include swimming with dolphins and feeding manatees; before making specific plans, check current availability and participation requirements.
Ferries from Hengqin Passenger Terminal serve the islands of Wailingding, Wanshan, Dong'ao and Guishan. As routes may change, it is advisable to check the current timetable before planning. Island coastlines, water activities and historic village centres offer different highlights. Consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip; this will help you find a holiday rental that suits your actual plans.
