Canton (Guangzhou) combines striking city views with historic sites, exhibitions and Baiyun Mountain. This offers different ways to shape a trip: you can focus on architecture and city history, put nature and scenery at the centre, or combine both with a visit to a museum. For families, this variety offers different topics to explore together, without every outing having to be the same.

City Views from Canton Tower

Canton Tower stands at the intersection of Guangzhou’s new central axis and the Pearl River landscape axis. It combines urban viewing experiences with leisure activities high above the ground. One of its distinctive features is an outdoor viewing platform at a height of 488 metres, described as the highest of its kind in the world. If you are interested in modern city views, this offers a different travel focus from the city’s historic sites and exhibitions.

The Pearl River also offers an evening city experience: on a night cruise, Guangzhou’s lights shimmer across the water. Boarding points include Canton Tower Fortune Pier on the Pearl River’s northeastern bank of Canton Tower, as well as Haixinsha East Wharf in the eastern Haixinsha district. These specific locations help you consider the river cruise as a separate activity; on their own, they do not indicate where a holiday rental is located.

Experience History and Design

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall tells the story of Chen clans from different parts of Guangdong who jointly built the hall in Guangzhou as an ancestral shrine. Its design features wood, brick, stone, ceramic and cast-iron sculptures, as well as bronze and iron castings and colourful decoration. This gives visitors a chance to see different materials and art forms in one place. If you are travelling with children, you can pay particular attention to the variety of techniques and surfaces on display.

Another historic highlight is the Beijing Road Cultural Tourism Area. It was Guangzhou’s political, cultural and economic centre for more than 2,000 years and is considered the city’s origin. In August 2016, the area was designated a national 4A-rated tourist attraction. Together, these details reflect both the neighbourhood’s long-standing significance and its later official classification.

Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall offers another perspective on the city’s history. It was built from 1928 to 1931, designed by Lü Yanzhi and funded through donations from Guangzhou residents and overseas Chinese. This combination of construction period, design and funding makes it a destination in its own right for anyone interested in architectural history and the civic engagement of the city’s people.

Baiyun Mountain and Natural Science

Baiyun Mountain lies in northeastern Guangzhou. It is a nationally significant scenic area and a state-rated 5A tourist attraction. The mountain includes Moxing Ridge, originally called Biyun Peak. At 382 metres, it is the highest peak of Baiyun Mountain. Here, the focus shifts to the landscape, alongside the city’s urban and cultural attractions.

Another way to explore nature is the Guangzhou Museum Natural Science Hall. Through meteorites, minerals and fossils, it presents the formation of the Earth and the development and evolution of life. It is also home to Guangzhou’s first permanent natural science exhibition. You can therefore choose between the landscape of Baiyun Mountain and an exhibition that presents natural history through specific objects.
