Discover Huaibei: Culture and Xiangshan
Accommodation in Huaibei
Huaibei can be explored through a wide range of cultural and natural themes. The city museum’s collection spans the period from the early Neolithic to modern times; Xiantong Temple in the Xiangshan scenic area dates back more than 1,700 years. A botanical science garden draws attention to protected tree species. When looking for a holiday rental, it is therefore helpful to start by asking: should your stay focus mainly on cultural history, the landscape or plant life?
City Museum and Temple: Two Historical Perspectives
The Huaibei City Museum’s collection comprises more than 10,000 cultural artefacts dating from the early Neolithic to modern times. These include 17 objects or groups of objects classified as national first-class cultural relics. The wording “objects or groups of objects” is important here: the number 17 does not necessarily refer to 17 individual items. In the wider Huaibei travel area, the city museum also has more than 6,000 square metres of exhibition space, along with permanent exhibitions and two temporary exhibitions. The collection and exhibition spaces thus offer different ways to engage with the museum: its broad chronological span and the range of ways its exhibits are presented.
Xiantong Temple in the Xiangshan scenic area complements this museum perspective with the history of a specific place. It was founded in the fifth year of the Taikang era of the Jin dynasty; its history stretches back more than 1,700 years. Today, the temple features the architectural style of the Ming and Qing periods. Unlike the collection spanning multiple eras, the focus here is on the temple’s recorded founding period and its present-day architectural style. Those interested in historic architectural forms will therefore find a different cultural focus here than in a collection of objects from many different periods.
Xiangshan: Forest Park, Landscape and Plants
The Anhui Xiangshan National Forest Park lies north of the urban area of Huaibei, within the wider Huaibei travel area. It covers 1,003.85 hectares. The Xiangshan scenic area covers 12.04 square kilometres and includes more than ten attractions. More than 140 plant species grow in the scenic area’s botanical science garden. These include the dawn redwood, which is nationally protected at the first level, as well as Ginkgo and golden larch, which are nationally protected at the second level. These details link a broad landscape perspective with specific species and their protection classifications. Those particularly interested in plants can treat the named trees as a theme in their own right, alongside the area’s size and attractions.
The 2021–2030 park plan divides the national forest park into a core scenic zone, a general recreation zone, an ecological protection zone, and a management and service zone. An additional coordination and control zone is planned outside the park. The plan thus distinguishes between landscape, recreation, ecological protection and management, organising the area around several functions rather than just individual attractions.
A Distinctive Cultural Focus: Legal Culture
The Legal Culture Base of the Ancient City on the Sui-Tang Canal is located on Changshan South Road in Xiangshan District, within the wider Huaibei travel area. The site incorporates themed stone inscriptions on law, a legal culture corridor, information boards, short films about legal culture and other works into the buildings and grounds of the scenic area. Law is the theme that connects these different elements. This distinguishes the site both from the city museum’s extensive collection and from the history of the temple in Xiangshan: legal culture is explored through inscriptions, information, films and works throughout the site. For travellers interested in cultural themes, it adds a distinct focus to the range of options.
Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Travel Interests
When looking for a holiday rental in Huaibei, you can first decide which of these perspectives you want to shape your trip: the museum’s long collecting history, the architecture of Xiantong Temple, Xiangshan’s plant life or the Legal Culture Base. The museum, temple, landscape and plant life each offer a different focus; these differences can help you choose a suitable theme for your stay.
