Shahumyan has an open-air museum resembling an ancient settlement. The Shahumyan Open-Air Museum was founded by Grigor Hakobi Aslanyan in 1991, includes a chapel, and displays historical household items and tools. Visitors from Armenia and abroad are welcomed there.

The history of the village also includes the Holy Mother of God Church in Shahumyan, which was reconsecrated on April 5, 2009. The church’s older basilica was built in the 1860s. In 2007, the Holy Mother of God Church was renovated, with a dome and a matagh house added as part of the work.

Landscape

Shahumyan is situated amid the flat fields of the Ararat Plain. Mount Ararat rises above the plain southwest of Shahumyan. Vineyards and orchards are cultivated around the village, where apricots and grapes are grown.

The official T-2-38 road runs through Shahumyan, Kaqtsrashen, and Narek to the Khosrov Reserve; it is listed as being 61.50 km long.
