Zuquala is a useful landmark for getting your bearings around Dukem: an access road to the volcanic cone branches off in Dukem from the road between Addis Ababa and Bishoftu. In the surrounding area, Zuquala rises 600 metres above the surrounding plain. Check current road conditions before setting out.

Zuquala: Crater Landscape and Monastery History

Zuquala is an isolated volcanic cone rising from the plain, with a well-preserved crater. The crater is two kilometres wide and sixty metres deep; inside it lies a shallow lake known as a sacred lake. These dimensions convey the scale of this striking crater, of which the lake is a distinctive feature.

The inner crater rim is covered with juniper forest. A monastery has stood on the crater rim for many centuries. At Zuquala, landscape and cultural heritage meet: the volcanic cone includes both the forested crater rim and the monastery’s long history. Mohammed Gragn destroyed one of the monastery buildings; it was rebuilt.

The wider destination of Oromia offers further landscapes and cultural settings. The Bale-Arsi Massif includes volcanic peaks and ridges, steep slopes, broad valleys, glacial lakes, lush forests, deep gorges and numerous waterfalls. Its southern slopes descend towards Harenna Forest. This includes areas of cloud forest and is Ethiopia’s second-largest tropical rainforest. In Bale Mountains National Park, the protected area above 3,000 m above sea level includes Africa’s largest expanse of afro-alpine habitat, with numerous glacial lakes, wetlands and moorlands.

The mountain nyala and Bale monkey are endemic to the Bale-Arsi Massif; it is also home to the most significant remaining population of the Ethiopian wolf. Thus, this part of Oromia is known for its mountains, forests and wildlife, while Zuquala, in the wider area around Dukem, offers a different landscape theme, with its single volcanic cone and monastery history.

November to April is the dry season in Bale Mountains National Park. These months are said to bring clear skies and good wildlife-watching conditions; conditions can vary from year to year. Visitors must register on arrival. Check current visitor procedures before your trip. Accommodation in the park includes community lodges and designated campsites; Dinsho has basic guesthouses. Check availability and arrangements before travelling.

The caves of Holqa Sof Omar are another distinctive experience in Oromia. They can be explored on foot; for the long, dark route, you need torches or other lighting, as well as a map showing landmarks in the underground cave system. Check local access conditions before visiting. Dirre Sheik Hussein offers a different cultural focus: its groups of buildings, monumental tombs and courtyards represent early medieval Islamic architecture.

When looking for a holiday rental in Dukem, it helps to distinguish between these themes: Zuquala represents crater landscapes and monastery history in the surrounding area; the examples from Oromia show a broader range of mountain, forest and cultural settings. Consider which landscapes and experiences you want to focus on during your trip.
