Goheung-eup brings together very different themes for a stay in Goheung-gun: Jonsimdang represents the history of local administration, while traces of the former Heungyang-eupseong fortress point to a longer historical period. Goheung Traditional Market adds a practical perspective with its specific range of goods and regular market days. In this way, architectural and administrative history meet the everyday life of a public market.

Jonsimdang and the History of Local Administration

Jonsimdang was built in 1739 by Kim Si-geol as a government office. The magistrate, his deputy, and six administrative departments conducted official business there. Its use illustrates the building’s function: it served not only a single official, but also the various branches of local administration.

The Amun gatehouse at Jonsimdang is believed to have been built in 1765; this date is inferred from an inscription. Another important year is 1988, when Jonsimdang was dismantled and repaired. The side rooms added later were restored to their original form in the process. The construction date, the estimated date of the gatehouse, and the later repairs thus mark different chapters in the building’s history.

Traces of Heungyang-eupseong

Heungyang-eupseong offers a different view of the past. From the establishment of Heungyang-hyeon in 1441 until the administrative name was changed to Goheung in 1914, the administrative seat was located at the site of the former fortress. This timeline links the history of the place to a long period as an administrative center.

Gates, walls, bastions, and wells remain from the former fortress. These traces include both defensive structures and wells, giving the historic site tangible architectural features. While Jonsimdang represents a government building with defined administrative functions, Heungyang-eupseong connects the former administrative seat with surviving fortress structures.
