Gyeongju can be explored through a wide variety of discoveries: Daereungwon combines a largely flat park with tombs from the Silla period, Cheonmachong displays historical artefacts, and Gyerim preserves an ancient birth legend. There is also the Jungang Market night market, with food and seating. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between cultural sites, stories about the past and a shared meal stop.

Silla sites and their distinctive details

Daereungwon is a burial mound park with 23 tombs from the Silla period. Its largely flat grounds define the character of this place and distinguish it from a visit focused mainly on individual exhibits. If you are travelling with children, you can use the number of tombs as a starting point for talking about the site's long history and the people of the Silla period. Daereungwon is a cultural site in Gyeongju and can be included as a focus in your exploration of the city's history.

Cheomseongdae offers another striking detail: about 365 stones were used to build it, symbolising the number of days in a year. This makes the number itself a starting point for closer observation. By contrast, Cheonmachong draws attention to artefacts from the Silla period. The objects on display there include a gold crown; visitors can also explore the interior of Cheonmachong. A symbolic architectural feature and tangible historical objects thus offer different ways of engaging with the past.

A legend in the ancient forest

Gyerim is a thousand-year-old forest that preserves the birth legend of Kim Alji. According to this tradition, Kim Alji is considered the progenitor of the Gyeongju Kim clan. Gyerim therefore offers a different perspective from tombs and artefacts: here, a story about origins takes centre stage. If you are travelling with your family, you can use the legend as a conversation starter alongside the material evidence of the Silla period. The forest, the cultural site of Daereungwon and the objects in Cheonmachong each offer their own way of engaging with the past, without requiring you to choose just one way of exploring it.

Food at the night market

The Jungang Market night market has about 20 Hanok-style stalls. A variety of food is available, and seating lets you eat what you buy right there. This makes a visit to the market different from a tour devoted solely to historical sites: food and sitting together are explicitly part of what's on offer here. The number of stalls is approximate, not an exact fixed count. When choosing what to experience on your trip, you can add this culinary side of Gyeongju to your cultural visits.

Choose accommodation based on what you want to focus on

Gyeongju's main historical sites lie within a 2 km radius and can be explored on foot. If you want to experience this part of the city on foot, the exact location of your holiday apartment may be an important consideration in your search. Check whether the location suits your planned focus rather than assuming a connection between your accommodation and a particular attraction. For other daily highlights, you can consider Daereungwon, Cheonmachong, Gyerim or the night market. What matters to your family will also determine what you look for first in the location of a holiday apartment in Gyeongju.
