Maiquetía offers different ways to explore art and history: a large-scale work defines a corridor at the international airport, plazas recall the city’s cultural heritage, and religious sites preserve their own historical stories. These themes do not make up a single sightseeing itinerary, but offer different reasons to learn about Maiquetía. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay most.

Art that engages with its surroundings

Carlos Cruz-Diez’s artwork “Cromointerferencia de color aditivo” covers 2,608 square meters. It extends across the floor and side walls of the central corridor on the first floor of Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar. So the work does not just cover a wall: it incorporates several surfaces of a long interior space. For art enthusiasts, its distinctive appeal lies in its scale and the way it connects the floor and side walls. This setting sets the work apart from a single painting or an isolated sculpture.

Plazas and historical traces

A historical cultural heritage tour of Maiquetía described in 2018 included six sites. These included Plaza Lourdes, Plaza Padre Machado and Hospital San José. Plaza Jerusalén, with a figure of El Cristo, was also named as part of the tour. The plazas and the hospital represent different aspects of local history; they are not interchangeable stops. The date is useful context if you are learning about the cultural heritage tour as it was at that time.

The original statue of the Virgin Mary and its plinth stand in Plaza Lourdes, dating from the plaza’s inauguration on February 21, 1902. A local historian traces both to this event. Another religious story connects Maiquetía with the Church of San Sebastián: a replica of the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is located there. The papal representative in Venezuela blessed it on February 8, 1884. Together, these details show different ways of commemorating the past—a statue in a plaza and a grotto inside a church.

Hospital San José also has a long history. It opened on April 22, 1888, under the direction of Father Santiago Machado and Sister Mother Emilia de San José. Mother Emilia was the founder of the Hermanitas de los Pobres de Maiquetía. The mortal remains of Mother Emilia and Father Machado are in the hospital courtyard and chapel. These details give the hospital particular historical significance without reducing its history to a single date.

A garden and chapels at Plaza Jerusalén

A 2023 report describes the Centro Memorial Cultural Ecológico at Plaza Jerusalén as having a garden, open paths, benches and green spaces. The center as described also includes Stations of the Cross chapels, a central chapel and a conference hall. In the Stations of the Cross chapels, elaborate bas-reliefs depict scenes from each station. The garden, chapels and reliefs offer different points of interest at the center: the design of the outdoor space, the sacred setting and the visual depiction of the Stations of the Cross.

Plan your stay around your interests

You can distinguish the local attractions by what you would like to focus on: Cruz-Diez’s large-scale art, the history of the plazas, or religious landmarks and their visual language. This can help you decide whether Maiquetía suits your stay before you choose a holiday apartment. Compare each property’s specific details with your own requirements; the area’s cultural features alone do not tell you about the amenities or availability of individual holiday apartments.
