Highlands and waterfalls define Rivas Davila’s natural appeal. Páramo La Negra lies at an elevation of 2,600 metres or more in the western part of Municipio Rivas Dávila; Páramo de Morillo is located in Sector Nieto at 2,800 metres. There are also designated protected areas and a tourism project launched in 2024 centred on the Ruta Turística de las Flores. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on the páramo landscapes or the distinctive waterfalls.

Highlands and Protected Areas

Páramo La Negra lies within Parque Nacional Batallón y la Negra. Another protected-area designation is the Veriguaca–Páramo La Negra sector, which is designated as a nature restoration zone within Parque Nacional Gral. Juan Pablo Peñalosa. These protected-area designations add a perspective on the municipality’s designated natural areas to the information about elevation.

Páramo de Morillo is also shaped by its location and natural features: it is in Sector Nieto in Municipio Rivas Dávila and has two waterfalls with different formations. One resembles a brick wall covered in moss. The second drops 70 metres into a pool approximately 8 metres long and 6 metres wide. Páramo de Morillo is also designated as an ABRAE to protect biodiversity, ecological balance, flora and fauna, and water catchment areas.

Waterfalls and Trip Planning

The waterfalls at Páramo de Morillo are outside the national park’s recreational areas and have not been developed for tourism. The stated access route is a 7 km walk taking about five hours, accompanied by park rangers. This information can help you plan the visit as a separate undertaking requiring time and an escort. Check access conditions before making firm plans to visit.

The Ruta Turística de las Flores offers a different focus. Municipio Rivas Dávila launched the project in 2024. Agricultural and flower producers are working on it together with the national government; its stated aims include promoting tourism in the region and highlighting its natural and cultural resources. This places nature-related themes alongside a project connected to agriculture and flower production, without assuming that the route is currently operating as a visitor attraction.

Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When searching for a holiday rental, your preferred focus can be a good starting point: the páramo landscapes and waterfalls lend themselves to a nature-focused trip, while the Ruta Turística de las Flores highlights agricultural and cultural resources. The specific access conditions are a separate factor to consider, especially when visiting the waterfalls.

Registration and checks are required for expeditions and mountaineering ascents to the glacial peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Check the requirements again before undertaking such a trip. This information concerns Mérida and the Sierra Nevada, not the páramo areas described in Rivas Davila.
