Santa Lucía: Culture, Parks and Rodó
Accommodation in Santa Lucía
Santa Lucía reveals itself through distinctive cultural sites and a wide variety of green spaces: historic church collections, the cultural center dedicated to José Enrique Rodó, parks, outdoor sculptures and rural visits each add their own character. You can plan your stay around the discoveries that interest you most—from literary history and collections to vegetation, public art and local produce. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
Ecclesiastical Heritage and Rodó’s Life Story
The Bicentenaria Iglesia San Juan Bautista is one of Santa Lucía’s historic attractions. The Parroquia San Juan Bautista’s heritage includes four French-origin bells: the Sagrado Corazón bell weighs 1,300 kilograms, the Inmaculada 900, San Juan Bautista 700 and Santa Lucía 400 kilograms. The church also preserves well-kept baptismal and marriage registers, along with furnishings and liturgical objects from different periods. The bells, archival records and furnishings offer different ways to explore the history of this place.
The Centro Cultural Museo Casa de Rodó is closely associated with the writer: José Enrique Rodó lived in this house until he was nine years old. It is also home to the first and only museum dedicated to his life and work. The Casa de la Cultura offers courses and workshops there and holds exhibitions; the Biblioteca Municipal Clemente Estable is also located in the building. The site thus brings literature and biography together with an ongoing cultural program.
The garden of the Centro Cultural Museo Casa de Rodó also recalls Rodó’s place in Santa Lucía’s history. It features terracotta statues that once stood in front of the Palacio Lacueva, as well as a monolith erected by local residents in 1972 in the writer’s honor. The cultural center has a ramp for visitors with disabilities; check access conditions before your visit.
Historical Traces and Special Stories
The Hotel Biltmore preserves furnishings dating from 1920 and the original 19th-century garage wall. Room 32 is no longer used for overnight stays; instead, it is kept for visitors in the condition it was in on the night Carlos Gardel sang there. That performance took place on October 26, 1933, at the request of José Nasazzi. If you would like to see the room, check access arrangements before your visit.
Green Spaces and Outdoor Art
Parque Municipal Clemente Estable is an eight-hectare green and recreational space in Santa Lucía. Winding paths run through the vegetation, and there are also benches and recreational facilities. The park at Quinta Capurro offers a different experience: its nine hectares contain a variety of exotic and native plant species. Together, they offer different nature experiences: a park focused on recreation and trails, and a garden space distinguished by its diversity of plants.
In Parque de Santa Lucía, the Ruta de las Esculturas features wooden sculptures by Ángel Roquero. Their subjects draw on native wildlife, bringing public art into the park experience. If you are interested in nature-inspired art, you can discover an artistic perspective on regional wildlife here alongside the green spaces.
Rural Experiences and Choosing Your Accommodation
Senderos de Santa Lucía is a group of rural producers that offers visits to rural properties and a garden park. The program also includes homemade lunches and/or afternoon snacks. This rural focus complements the cultural sites, green spaces and outdoor art with insights into local production, as well as time spent together over a meal or snack.
As you plan, you can consider which experiences you want to spend your time on: church collections and Rodó’s life story, green spaces, sculptures or rural visits. These interests can guide your search for a holiday rental in Santa Lucía without reducing the town’s varied character to a single activity.
