Moyobamba Province brings together a canoe trip through a wetland, a thermal bath, a summit trail, and a museum. Each offers a different focus: water, landscapes, and history provide various ways to get to know the province.

Water experiences in wetlands and at waterfalls

At the Reserva Ecológica Tingana, a canoe trip on the Río Avisado takes you through the wetland. The Naciente del río Tío Yacu offers a different water experience in the wider San Martín destination: crystal-clear waters form pools and small waterfalls where visitors can swim. This means a trip through a wetland and a visit to swim in pools and waterfalls offer different vacation focuses. If you plan to swim, keep in mind that conditions on site may change.

Thermal waters or summit views

Aguas Termales San Mateo is a thermal bath at the foot of Cerro San Mateo, at an elevation of 960 meters in the Selva Alta ecosystem. In the wider San Martín destination, the Aguas Termales de San Mateo thermal bath complex has seven pools with temperatures of approximately 32 to 40 °C. The distance from Moyobamba’s main square to Aguas Termales San Mateo is 5.1 kilometers; by private car, the drive takes 15 minutes on a paved road. Check opening hours and available services before your visit.

Morro de Calzada offers a different landscape focus. In the wider San Martín destination, it is a natural viewpoint with 360-degree panoramic views and limestone formations in the Río Mayo valley. The ascent starts at the Centro de Interpretación and follows a 1.5-kilometer zigzag trail with partly rocky terrain to the viewpoint at the summit. Hikes at Morro can also offer opportunities to observe the local flora and fauna. When planning, the drive to the thermal pools and the ascent along the rocky trail offer two different ways to get around.

Museum and regional visitor information

The Museo Departamental San Martín has nine exhibition rooms featuring archaeological, ethnographic, and historical exhibits. They represent the earliest evidence of people who settled the Amazon region, particularly the San Martín region. In the wider San Martín destination, the museum also displays regional cultural treasures such as La Gran Saposoa, El Gran Pajatén, and the Chazuta funerary urns. The collection also includes prehistoric animal fossils and collections of pottery, stone objects, textiles, and wood. Bringing these collections together makes the museum a cultural destination alongside the natural attractions. Check current opening hours before visiting.

Casa del Turista Onercocha in the community of Paraíso del Alto Mayo offers a reception, visitor information, and other services before and after a visit to Laguna Onercocha. In the wider San Martín destination, Destino Turístico Alto Mayo is located in the northern part of the Departamento de San Martín and includes the provinces of Moyobamba and Rioja. Moyobamba Province is therefore part of this broader regional area.
